Tornadoes and storms leave trail of destruction in Ezhou.
Two tornadoes caused severe devastation in Hubei province, in central China, on Monday night (6). According to the state agency Xinhua, at least eight people died and one remains missing in the province after winds of up to 149 km/h ripped off roofs and overturned vehicles.
A video recorded by a witness recorded the exact moment one of the tornadoes crossed the city of Ezhou. According to reports from state broadcaster CCTV, at least five deaths were recorded as a result of the phenomenon in the city.
The Hubei Civil Defense also confirmed on Weibo that strong storms and gales hit the region. Experts warn that the occurrence of tornadoes is extremely rare in Hubei.
The last event of this nature in the province was recorded in May 2021. For around four hours, winds that reached level 13 on the extended Beaufort scale (which corresponds to winds in the range of 133 km/h to 148 km/h) also swept the cities of Huangshi, Huanggang and Xianning.
Warning of more storms and evacuations
The National Meteorological Center issued a statement recommending that northeastern Hubei and other neighboring provinces prepare for new records of torrential rain. The extreme climate scenario affects several parts of the country:
Guangxi: the region, which is still recovering from Typhoon Maysak (which left four dead in the capital Nanning in recent days), is expected to accumulate up to 260 mm of rain, with a high risk of causing landslides.
Gansu: in western China, a landslide in a mountainous area swept away 33 people in the early hours of the day, and 16 of them remain missing.
Given the severity of the floods, Chinese President Xi Jinping made a statement calling for "full efforts" in rescue and rescue operations for the victims.
In addition to internal storm fronts, meteorological authorities are monitoring the progression of Supertyphoon Bavi.
The storm advanced across the Pacific recording winds of up to 290 km/h as it passed through territories such as Guam, Saipan, Tinian and Rota on Monday. The phenomenon is now heading towards Taiwan and is expected to make landfall on the east coast of mainland China later this week.
