Check out the list of some of the best films of 2026, according to Variety

With the arrival of July, Variety magazine journalists made a special selection of the main films released in 2026, so far. The list brings together animation titles, such as "Toy Story 5", and horror, such as "Obsession", which were huge box office successes.

The publication highlighted that the selection was made based on the personal choices of the journalists in the house and that it does not intend to be a definitive list. The intention is to group projects that have been highlighted so far.

The documentary-concert, directed and scripted by Baz Luhrmann, was released worldwide in cinemas in February 2026. The production was constructed from rare restored images of Elvis Presley performing in Las Vegas in 1969 and in the early 70s, discovered by the director during research for the biopic "Elvis" from 2022. Instead of focusing on a traditional biographical narrative, the film innovates by allowing Elvis Presley himself to sing his own story through historical records.

The film is a dramatic comedy set at a dinner between neighbors, directed by Olivia Wilde and produced by A24. Dinner takes unexpected and chaotic turns when secrets are revealed.

"Burning Revenge"
The suspense film is a dark comedy drama, released in May 2026, which adapts the award-winning 2018 play written by Aleshea Harris. The production mixes elements of Greek tragedy, afropunk and spaghetti western. The story follows twin sisters Racine and Anaia, survivors of an arson attack in their childhood and marked by deep physical and psychological scars. They discover that their mother (whom they call "God") is alive in a nursing home, but on the verge of death.

Burning Revenge - Disclosure
"Obsession"
The feature film that launched Curry Barker's career is a supernatural horror film that has grossed more than 200 million dollars to date. The story follows Bear (Michael Johnston), a young man secretly in love with his childhood best friend, Nikki (Inde Navarrette). Desperate to be reciprocated, he buys a mystical artifact called One Wish Willow and asks Nikki to love him more than anyone else in the world. The wish is granted, but pure love quickly turns into a violent, possessive and supernatural obsession.

"Our Hero, Balthazar"
This comedy, directed by Oscar Boyson, is a satire about performative activism. The story follows Balthazar "Balthy" Malone (Jaeden Martell), a teenager from a wealthy family in New York. To try to impress a classmate, who is a committed activist, Balthy begins posting dramatic videos on social media calling for gun control. The situation gets out of control when he is confronted by an internet profile, and becomes convinced that he is a potential mass shooter.

"Power Ballad"
It is a comedy musical directed by John Carney and follows Rick (Paul Rudd), a decadent wedding singer. His life changes when he crosses paths with Danny (Nick Jonas), a pop star and former member of a boy band.

During a late-night jam session, the two create a strong musical connection. Trouble arises when Danny turns one of Rick's personal compositions into a smash hit song to revive his own career. Rick then begins a dogged journey to claim recognition and copyright for the song.

"Rose of Nevada"
The production is a British mystery and science fiction film released in April, directed by Mark Jenkin. The work ends the director's acclaimed series of productions focused on the Cornwall region, mixing maritime drama with an enigmatic time travel plot. The story tells a mystery of a small fishing village in the United Kingdom, shaken when a fishing boat that had mysteriously disappeared at sea 30 years ago with its entire crew, the Rose of Nevada, resurfaces in the harbor completely intact, but without a soul on board.

Written and directed by acclaimed Hungarian filmmaker Ildikó Enyedi, the film stands out for having as its central protagonist an ancient tree - an imposing Ginkgo biloba located in the Botanical Garden of Marburg, Germany. The plot is divided into three temporally distant moments, spread over more than a century. The tree acts as a silent witness to different historical periods in Germany.

The new sequel to the acclaimed animation features technology as the main villain of the famous toys. In this episode, Jessie and her companions must fight for the attention of children, who now spend more time on screens than imagining scenarios and inventing games in the real world. The sensitive plot talks about childhood and whether or not toys are obsolete and "forgettable".
