The United States central command announced this Wednesday (8) the resumption of attacks against Iran after the end of the ceasefire between the two countries. In the assessment of International Relations professor Carlos Gustavo Poggio, this ceasefire never offered solid foundations for lasting peace.
"What surprised me was the optimism of the markets with these agreements, which were clearly very fragile agreements. The structural conditions were not given for this agreement", said Paggio in an interview with Hora H this Wednesday.
The professor highlighted that Trump tends to operate predominantly based on economic logic, disregarding Iran's internal political and ideological incentives.
"When we deal with a country, it's different from dealing with a company, which is the type of negotiation that Donald Trump is used to", highlighted the professor.
In Poggio's assessment, the United States finds itself faced with a set of equally unfavorable alternatives.
"Continuing this war, deepening it, is not a good option for the United States. Stopping the war and leaving Iran with a much stronger geopolitical position than it had before the start of the war is also not a good option", he analyzed.

For the professor, this situation derives from a "wrong decision, which was not very well thought out, was not very well planned and was not very well discussed with the American public".
Europe under multiple pressures
The professor also commented on the European scenario, highlighting that the continent simultaneously faces geopolitical, economic and energy pressures.
In addition to the war in Ukraine, countries like Germany are experiencing economic difficulties, and the conflict in the Middle East increases risks related to the price of oil.
"Europeans are in a very delicate situation, and this delicate situation has, in a certain way, encouraged Europeans to seek a new strategic solution," he said.
Poggio recalled that, since the end of the Second World War, Europe has become accustomed to depending on the United States as a guarantor of its security, which is the basis of NATO's founding agreement in 1949.
Now, according to him, this relationship is called into question by statements such as Trump's threat to cut ties with Spain. "Something absolutely out of the ordinary", said Poggio.
Gradual escalation
Regarding possible developments of the conflict, Poggio drew a parallel with other episodes in North American history, such as the conflicts with Iraq and Vietnam.
"American presidents who start a war with great optimism, thinking that it will be resolved very easily, given the surplus of military power they have, end up getting involved in a war much longer than the one they initially anticipated", he stated.
The professor concluded by observing that the scenario with Iran presents "ingredients for a gradual escalation" of the conflict, given the unpredictability of Trump's positions.
"He is a president who is incapable of making any kind of agreement without going on social media the next day to say that he is humiliating his opponent. Given these conditions, I see the situation with a lot of pessimism", declared Poggio.
The statement announcing the resumption of attacks, released on social media, stated that US forces began "additional attacks against Iran to further reduce the country's ability to threaten freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz."
According to the statement, "the United States holds Iran responsible for the recent unjustified aggression against commercial ships and crews freely sailing through a vitally important international waterway."
During a NATO meeting in Ankara, the capital of Türkiye, Trump confirmed that new attacks would be carried out. Iranian authorities responded promptly, promising attacks on US bases.
