Alexander Zverev overcame one of the biggest obstacles in his quest for the Wimbledon title by ending a long losing streak against Taylor Fritz with a 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 victory to book a place in the semi-finals and stay on track to win his second Grand Slam title.

After falling short in his last seven meetings with Fritz, including at the All England Club in 2024, French Open champion Zverev finally turned things around with a confident showing for a semi-final meeting with Arthur Fery, who defeated Flavio Cobolli.

By reaching his first semi-final at Wimbledon, Zverev became the fifth German to achieve this feat in the professional era, which began in 1968, joining Boris Becker, Michael Stich, Rainer Schuettler and Tommy Haas.

"It looks great. I hope to play two more matches here, so we'll see how things play out, but for now I'm extremely happy to be in the semi-finals, especially after beating Taylor, who I haven't beaten in over two years," said Zverev.

"He's been beating me for two years in a row, and yes, I played a fantastic game."

Scream of relief
The German, second seed, took advantage of an early break to take a 5-4 lead and let out a cry of relief after resisting a late reaction from Fritz in the tenth game, winning the first set under the scorching London sun.

Zverev raised the pressure again in the next set after Fritz received medical attention for a nagging right knee problem after three games, and the 29-year-old celebrated effusively after achieving a crucial break that left his opponent in trouble.

A few moments later, the crowd erupted in applause as news arrived that Britain's Fery had gone two sets to zero on Center Court, and Zverev soon followed suit with a smooth serve, further extending the lead as Fritz's hopes began to fade.

"Nothing on a tennis court is easy. If I was playing with my 5-year-old daughter, maybe it would be easy... for her, but I knew I needed to concentrate from the first moment," said Zverev.

"In the first game I served in, I had three break points against me and I knew it would be a difficult match no matter what happened, as you get that feeling that you haven't beaten an opponent in over two years."

"I knew I needed to play a near-perfect game to have a chance, and I feel like I accomplished that today."

Zverev and Fery break new ground
Zverev hit a spectacular forehand winner to secure a double break at 4-1 in the third set, which he closed out easily to reach his 12th Grand Slam semi-final overall and continue to make history in south-west London, as did home hope Fery.

"You can all root for Fery", joked Zverev with the audience. "It's okay. I understand and I have no problem with it. I hope it's good for me, but not so good for others."

"But no, look, it's going to be an emotional day for both of us, the first time in the Wimbledon semi-finals. For him, it's a fairytale story. Do you understand what I did? Yeah. Very smart. But I need to trust myself and my tennis."

"I hope I can perform well and then we'll see what happens."
