The President of the United States, Donald Trump, informed this Wednesday (8) the President of Syria, Ahmed al-Sharaa, that he has decided to remove the country from the American list of states sponsoring terrorism.
"I promised to remove all the barriers that prevent you from rebuilding your country and very soon, you will finally be able to do that," Trump wrote in a letter sent to Sharaa and seen by Reuters.

"We have American companies ready to invest in Syria and help make your country greater and more prosperous than ever before," Trump added in the letter, which, according to a senior US government official, was delivered to Sharaa following the meeting between the two in Ankara this Wednesday.
Trump stated that he has already notified Congress, which will now carry out a 45-day review before the decision takes effect.

Classifying a country as a sponsor of terrorism imposes restrictions on US foreign assistance, exports of defense products and certain financial transactions.
Last year, Trump signed an executive order ending a program of United States sanctions against Syria, allowing the end of the country's isolation from the international financial system.
Several Saudi companies plan investments worth billions of dollars as part of Riyadh's efforts to support Syria's recovery, while other Gulf countries have also promised financial aid.

Trump on Wednesday praised Sharaa, who was commander of the Nusra Front, a branch of Al-Qaeda in Syria, before breaking away from the group in 2016. After that, he led a coalition of Islamic rebel factions that, at the end of 2024, overthrew the government of Bashar al-Assad.
The American president also praised Sharaa's actions against the extremist group Islamic State in the region.
"He is respected by everyone, including me," said Trump.
