The Donald Trump administration wants Iran to remove mines placed in the Strait of Hormuz, but an expert says the task should be challenging for Tehran.


A document with White House talking points on the memorandum of understanding states that "Iran will demine and remove all obstacles" in the strategic sea lane.


A senior U.S. government official told reporters on Monday that Washington expects operations in the strait to "return to normal quickly, certainly within 30 days, once they commit to removing all mines."

Scott Savitz, a senior engineer at RAND, told CNN that Iran is "very good at laying mines, but mine countermeasures are a fundamentally different type of operation, so it's not clear how effective they are at that."


"This is difficult, requires a lot of care and is work that demands extreme precision", he observed.


"It's technically very complex. It's more likely that (Iran) has some sonar capabilities and some capability to maybe do scans," but almost certainly not to pinpoint the exact location of the mines, he said.

The U.S. official also said Monday that if the Iranians are "not moving fast enough," the U.S. could help them deal with mine clearance because "right now we know where all the mines are."


According to the government official, there are some mines that, if prioritized, could be eliminated by opening up several other shipping routes.
