On Eye Health Day, celebrated on Friday (10), experts warn of the need to carry out the Eye Test, which identifies possible vision problems.

In addition, it is also recommended that, between six months and the baby's first year, the first routine preventive exam is carried out with an ophthalmologist.

If the Eye Test shows positive results, the baby is allowed to return home. However, he will not have full central nervous system development until he is four months old.

Up to this age group, vision is blurred and people may experience strabismus or even squint when seeing, without the need for medical concern.

The ophthalmologist at the Meu Doutor Novamed clinic network, from Bradsaúde, Dr. Cláudia Mielli Gutierrez Guedes states that the assessment is simple and painless, with a light projected onto the pupil, to analyze the retinal reflection.

"This reflection must be red, due to the blood vessels. If it is white, it may indicate problems with the lens, such as cataracts, congenital glaucoma or, very rarely, a tumor called retinoblastoma. With this result, the child is referred to an ophthalmologist. The earlier the diagnosis, the better the child's visual prognosis, and they will have a better chance of cure and treatment", comments Dr. Cláudia Guedes.

According to the ophthalmologist, the development of a child's vision occurs from birth to six or seven years of age, requiring routine ophthalmological examinations, often already referred by pediatricians until the age of two.

After this age, some signs may indicate the need for a new consultation with a professional, such as getting too close to the TV, tilting the head to look at something, rubbing the eyes to focus, showing sensitivity to light, bumping into objects and even falling frequently.

In addition to the indications of strabismus, it is also important to pay attention to complaints during school age, such as headaches and difficulty reading things written on the classroom blackboard.
