A new study, released this Tuesday (16), points out that indigenous knowledge, governance systems and worldviews generate benefits for the planet's climate and biodiversity. Furthermore, it was identified that people's cultures are interconnected with conservation processes.

Among those interviewed, 100% of indigenous people observed changes in the climate and weather conditions in their territories. Already 61% reported direct impacts from extractive industries, such as mining, logging, commercial agriculture and infrastructure development on communities.

The study "Knowledge systems and practices of indigenous peoples for climate survival" (in free translation) was carried out after interviews with indigenous peoples from 43 communities on six continents, in collaboration with experts and indigenous communities from Africa, Asia, the Americas and the Pacific.

The analysis evaluates how communities care for territories through traditional practices based on observation of nature and intergenerational links with the places where they live.

In addition, it was identified that culture and conservation are interconnected, as the same traditions that preserve languages, rituals and identities also protect land, water and wildlife. Numbers indicate that 60% of terrestrial mammals have more than 10% of their distribution in indigenous territories.

Around 96% stated that communities have reserved land or water for sacred or cultural uses and that they serve as habitat for fauna and refuge for primary forests.

In Brazil, an example of this action is carried out by the Mamoadate people who protect wild fruit trees and palm trees essential for local fauna.

Despite the fundamental role that indigenous peoples play in conserving healthy ecosystems, territories face major threats. According to the study, between 2018 and 2024, indigenous territories lost 2 billion metric tons of unrecoverable carbon due to mining, agricultural expansion, fires and other pressures.

"Indigenous knowledge underpins some of the world's most effective conservation efforts, and yet for too long it has been ignored, minimized or relegated to the background," said Johnson Cerda, who leads Conservation International's work with indigenous peoples and local communities and co-authored the study.

Thus, without recognition of territorial rights, many indigenous communities are unable to invest in the management of their territories or protect themselves against land grabbing and other invasions.
