The cold gained strength in the south of the country this Monday (6). More than 20 cities in Rio Grande do Sul recorded temperatures below zero, with frost in several regions.

The lowest temperature was recorded in Quaraí (RS), where thermometers registered -4.3°C. In Herval, the minimum was -2.5°C, while Barra do Quaraí (RS) and Uruguaiana (RS) recorded -2.4°C.

In Porto Alegre (RS), the temperature was 13°C in the morning - well above the lows of the previous week, when the city reached 4°C with a thermal sensation of just 1°C.

Cold front brings instability and risk of frost
In addition to low temperatures, a cold front also brought instability to the entire southern region of Brazil. According to reporter Gabriela Garcia, who monitors the region's weather conditions, light rains were already recorded in Porto Alegre (RS) in the morning.

"We should have rain in the three states of the southern region today in the form of showers", he stated. The most intense rainfall is expected to occur between the south of Paraná and the north of Rio Grande do Sul.

The arrival of a new mass of polar air should further reduce temperatures in the coming days. The cold is expected to spread across the South region, increasing the risk of frost, especially in mountainous and higher altitude areas in Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and in some parts of southern Paraná.

"In the coming days, we should have these intensely cold mornings, again with negative temperatures, especially in these higher areas", highlighted Gabriela Garcia.

Uruguay River overflows in São Borja
In addition to the intense cold, the Uruguay River exceeded the flood level in São Borja (RS), causing flooding in the city. The river passed the 9 meter mark - a level considered the limit for flooding - and reached 9 meters and 27 centimeters at 7am this Monday (6). The overflow had already occurred last week, and the river rose again this weekend.

According to the SGB (Brazilian Geological Survey), the level of the Uruguay River was gradually falling in the last few hours. The expectation is that the river will return to normal volume between the afternoon and evening of this Monday (6).

The municipality of São Borja (RS) had prepared a gymnasium as a shelter for residents who might become homeless, but the space did not need to be used. Only two people were left homeless and were welcomed into the homes of relatives and friends, according to the city hall.
