The EB (Brazilian Army) carried out a pre-qualification campaign for "kamikaze" drones and ammunition launchers before possible acquisitions by the Force.

The activity took place between June 22nd and July 3rd, in Rio de Janeiro, under the coordination of the DF (Manufacturing Directorate) and with the support of CAEx (Army Assessment Center). The objective was to evaluate the security, capacity and performance of systems available at the BID (Defense Industrial Base).

According to the Army, 84 drone systems were initially submitted by companies to the process. Of this total, 32 were qualified for the practical testing phase.

Among the equipment tested are DLMs (Ammunition Launching Drones), capable of transporting and releasing payloads on targets, and SMRPs (Remotely Piloted Munitions Systems), a category that includes "kamikaze" and "loitering" type drones. In these cases, the equipment itself is used against the target.

Pre-qualification was divided into three stages. In the first, safety, control and stability of the systems on short flights were evaluated. In the second, the drones had to demonstrate the ability to fulfill their intended function, using inert ammunition. In the third, there was a demonstration with real ammunition to measure the systems' performance.

Brigadier General Vasconcellos, head of the DF (Manufacturing Directorate), stated that the Army needs to keep up with technological changes in the military field.

"We must always be prepared and, in this preparation, we have to identify the evolutions in the art of war. That is why the Army is maintaining the forefront in science and technology, we need to advance in this area", he said.

The initiative is part of the Army's effort to expand knowledge about drone technologies available on the national market and bring the Force's operational demand closer to the production capacity of the defense industry. Based on the pre-qualification results, the Army's intention is to move forward in partnerships with BID companies that have qualified solutions. The objective is to improve the systems, subject them to new tests and, after eventual approval, pave the way for possible acquisitions by the Force.

The advance of drones on the battlefield has become one of the main recent transformations of modern warfare. Conflicts like the one in Ukraine have accelerated the use of unmanned equipment for surveillance, reconnaissance, munitions launches and precision strikes, while also increasing the demand for anti-drone systems, electronic warfare and means of detection and neutralization. In this scenario, Armed Forces from different countries began to treat drones and countermeasures as core capabilities, and no longer just complementary, for ground operations, defense of positions and protection of troops.
