The President of the United States, Donald Trump, informed this Wednesday (8) the President of Syria, Ahmed al-Sharaa, that he has decided to remove the country from the American list of State Sponsors of Terrorism.
"I promised to remove all the barriers that prevent you from rebuilding your country, and very soon, you will finally be able to do so," Trump wrote in a letter sent to Sharaa and seen by Reuters.
"We have American companies ready to invest in Syria and help make your country bigger and bigger. prosperous than ever before," Trump added in the letter, which, according to a senior US government official, was delivered to Sharaa following their meeting in Ankara on Wednesday.
Trump said he has already notified Congress, which will now conduct a 45-day review before the decision takes effect. an executive order ending a US sanctions program against Syria, allowing the country's isolation from the international financial system to end.
Several Saudi companies plan billion-dollar investments as part of Riyadh's efforts to support Syria's recovery, while other Gulf countries have also pledged financial aid.
Trump on Wednesday praised Sharaa, who was commander of the Nusra Front, al-Qaeda's branch in Syria, before breaking away from the group in 2016. He then led a coalition of Islamic rebel factions that, at the end of 2024, overthrew the government of Bashar al-Assad.
The American president also praised Sharaa's actions against the extremist group Islamic State in the region.
"He is respected by everyone, including me," said Trump.
