A few days before the deadline for Brazil and the United States to reach an agreement on tariffs, the American embassy released a program from the American Department of Commerce for Brazilian companies to seek to expand their participation in the country's market.
New tariffs should bring Brazil and China even closer together
According to the statement from the American representation, the objective is to "strengthen" the commercial relationship between the two countries. However, negotiations between authorities of the two countries regarding the tariff recommended by the office of the trade representative (USTR) have not progressed to the point of reversing the proposal.
In June, the USTR proposed the application of 25% tariffs on Brazilian goods following an investigation that accuses the Brazilian government of adopting practices that "burden or restrict" trade with North Americans. Among them are PIX, illegal deforestation, piracy and failures in the application of anti-corruption laws.
The deadline given by the American government for the conclusion of negotiations is July 15, and the assessment of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is that the USTR has shown itself to be "inflexible", disregarding the technical and trade data presented by Brazilian negotiators.
"The United States Embassy and Consulates in Brazil announce the launch of SelectUSA Every Day, an initiative that seeks to strengthen the connection of Brazilian companies with investment and expansion opportunities in the American market", says an excerpt from the American government's statement.
Experts assess that, as in the 2025 tariff, there is room for Brazil to negotiate this new US tariff threat

"Brazil remains the main origin of South American investment in the USA, with Brazilian companies present in more than 40 states and territories and contributing to the generation of jobs and the strengthening of the bilateral economic relationship", states another excerpt.

Trade partnership
The United States is the second largest Brazil's commercial partner in the world, second only to China.
Official data even show that the so-called trade balance is in surplus for the United States, that is, in terms of added value, Americans export more to Brazil than they import.
In this context, technicians from the two governments have met periodically to try to reach an agreement, but the assessment of Palácio do Planalto and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs - up until now - is that there will not be a complete reversal of tariffs, only occasional exceptions or reductions.
Brazil contests the 12.5% tariff and calls the US investigation 'arbitrary'
According to Itamaraty, there was a new technical round this Tuesday, and a high-level meeting is scheduled for the next few days between minister Márcio Elias Rosa (Development, Industry and Commerce), the secretaries of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Philip Fox Gough (Economic Affairs) and Maurício Lyrio (Environment) with American authorities, among them, Jamieson Greer.
