More than 300 companies and entities spoke out at USTR hearings

A list of 335 Brazilian and American companies and organizations formally expressed their opinion on the United States government's measure to propose a 25% tariff on Brazilian products, announced in July this year, based on section 301.

Another 30 demonstrations by individuals were recorded, such as that of the senator and pre-candidate for the Presidency of the Republic, Flávio Bolsonaro (PL).

The USTR (Office of the US Trade Representative) opened a space on its portal to receive comments on the measure and the deadline for sending comments was July 1st.

Section 301 is a legal provision that allows Americans to impose coercive tariffs on goods from countries whose activities are allegedly harming the United States' commercial sector.

Among the companies that spoke out are giants in their sectors, such as Coca-Cola, eBay, Nestlé, Faber-Castell and Tesla.

In addition to the Brazilian government's positioning, several sectoral entities in the country also registered their positioning on the USTR portal, such as CNA (National Confederation of Industry) and Fiesp (Federation of Industries of the State of São Paulo).

The Trump administration justified the taxation due to "policies and practices related to digital commerce and electronic payment services; unfair preferential tariffs; combating corruption; protecting intellectual property; access to the ethanol market; and illegal deforestation."

Companies opposing the resolution claim that this new tariff could bring short-term burdens on production chains and, furthermore, that the measure also harms Americans to the detriment of those being investigated.

It can be said that a good part of the registered manifestations are against the measure, since the majority are from Brazilian and American companies pointing out unfavorable points for their specific activity.
