The United States has revoked a general license that authorized the sale of Iranian oil, an American official said on Tuesday (7), warning that Iran's actions in the Strait of Hormuz were "totally unacceptable" and would have consequences, following attacks on oil tankers in the shipping lane.

Oil prices rose more than 3% after the announcement.

The American representative stated that negotiators continue to work to reach a final agreement with Iran, despite the recent escalation of tensions.

In June of this year, the American government reportedly signed an agreement with the Islamic Republic to suspend sanctions imposed on the country's oil sales.

The measure, which had been imposed on June 21, allowed Iran to sell and deliver oil, without suffering sanctions, to almost all countries in the world, including the United States, until August 21.

The revocation carried out by the US was taken after three oil tankers reported being hit by unknown projectiles in and around the Strait of Hormuz in recent days, the UKMTO (United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations) agency, linked to the British Navy, said in a report. There was no immediate comment from Tehran, nor any claim of responsibility.

The attacks and Washington's response threaten to jeopardize the fragile diplomatic understanding between the United States and Iran, increasing the risk that further retaliation will derail negotiations on a more comprehensive agreement.

Another US official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said initial indications were that the Islamic Republic had fired on three merchant ships.

The possible escalation comes as both sides have been working toward a deal that would include limits on Iran's nuclear program and the relief of some sanctions, including restrictions on oil exports.

The Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway between Iran and Oman, is one of the world's most important key points for energy transport, through which about a fifth of global oil consumption and large volumes of liquefied natural gas pass daily.

Any prolonged outages could raise energy prices and increase pressure on consumers and governments already facing higher fuel costs.

Oil exports remain a critical source of revenue for Iran, generating billions of dollars in hard currency that helps finance government spending and prop up an economy weakened by years of U.S. sanctions.

Despite the restrictions, Tehran has managed to expand shipments in recent years, mainly to China, making oil sales one of the country's main sources of economic sustenance.

Any new attempt to restrict these exports could put additional pressure on Iran's finances and its ability to sustain domestic programs and regional activities.
