Biofuel producer Be8 announces expansion into Italy

Brazilian biofuel producer Be8 has decided to expand operations to Italy, with a branch in Milan, which could facilitate business with European Union countries, the company told Reuters on Thursday.

Be8, which already has operations in Switzerland - a country that is not part of the European Union, unlike Italy -, assesses that Italian operations could serve as a base for exports of biofuels and raw materials to Europe such as soybean oil, fats, used cooking oil and residual inputs.

"This is another important step towards fulfilling our strategic planning and expanding the company's geographic presence with the supply of renewable energy", said the president of Be8, Erasmo Carlos Battistella.

The businessman said that the group, one of the largest biodiesel producers in Brazil, does not rule out investing in biofuel production in Italy, at a time when the trade agreement between the European Union and Mercosur has just come into force.

"This (investment in production) will depend on the demand to be developed in the coming years", highlighted Battistella.

In addition to exporting products, the company is considering investing in a logistics structure in Italy, which will function as a connection and distribution point in the region.

To this end, the unit will seek to obtain sustainability certifications, complying with traceability criteria.

The group already maintains a commercial office in Geneva and a biodiesel industrial unit in Domdidier, Switzerland.

The company, headquartered in Passo Fundo (RS), is currently investing in a wheat ethanol unit in Rio Grande do Sul, scheduled to open next year.

With units in Paraná, Mato Grosso, Piauí, Pará and Paraguay, the company has among its products a double-distilled and additive biodiesel called BeVant, which can replace 100% diesel, being used in several initiatives, including the Copa Truck, a truck competition in Brazil.
