The capital of Ukraine, Kiev, was the target of a lethal attack by Russia in the early hours of Monday (6), on the eve of a crucial NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) summit in Turkey, in which United States President Donald Trump intends to participate.

Large flaming explosions lit up the night sky as ballistic missiles and drones struck parts of the city, killing at least nine people and injuring dozens, according to city officials.

Residential buildings were hit in the attack, leaving people trapped in damaged multi-storey apartment blocks, while cars were seen burning in the city's streets.

Rescue teams pulled residents, including children, from the upper floors of a damaged building in the Podilskyi district on Monday morning, Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Telegram.

Aerial warning sirens were activated throughout the city, prompting many residents to seek shelter.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had warned just hours earlier that Moscow was "preparing a new large-scale attack", and the offensive came just days after a violent Russian attack on Kiev killed 30 people last Thursday, the third deadliest since the start of the war.

Intelligence once again indicates that the Russians are preparing a new massive strike. This is typical of Putin: right after America's Independence Day and before the NATO Summit in Ankara. "This is typical of Putin, right after US Independence Day and before the NATO summit in Ankara," wrote Zelensky on Sunday (5), in a post on X, before the attack.

Residential buildings in Kiev's southeastern Darnytskyi district, an area of the city that suffered significant damage on Thursday, were badly damaged in Monday's attacks and were being evacuated, the mayor said. Videos geolocated by CNN showed a large explosion and several high-rise residential buildings on fire after being hit.

Russia's war in Ukraine will serve as a backdrop for the summit in Türkiye, which begins on Tuesday.

Trump, who will be in Ankara, offered again on Sunday to help end the war, during a nearly 90-minute call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry.

The American president also spoke with Zelensky on Saturday.

Trump had promised to resolve the war within 24 hours of returning to office, but, more than 500 days into his second term, his government has still not found a path to peace between the two countries, despite several attempts.

Russian forces have stepped up efforts to seize a larger swath of Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region, a key Kremlin objective, as Ukraine's cities face near-daily attacks from drones and missiles launched by Moscow.

Ukraine has also recently stepped up missile and drone attacks against strategic infrastructure deep within Russian territory, including oil refineries, ports and military factories.

The high number of deaths in last Thursday's attack on Kiev highlighted the challenge faced by Ukrainian authorities in protecting the capital, as Russia innovates and increasingly employs jet-powered drones, such as the Geran-4, which fly too fast for Kiev's mobile defense groups and can only be shot down by surface-to-air missiles or fighter jets.

On Sunday, Zelensky reiterated his appeal to US and European allies for missiles for the Patriot systems, stating that "any delay in the delivery of missiles for our air defense, missiles for the Patriots, means loss of life and encourages Russia to continue the war."

"Missiles for the Patriots are needed not in depots at this time, but in Patriot units in Ukraine," Zelensky said.

Zelensky considers Patriot systems key to intercepting Russia's arsenal, which includes ballistic missiles, loitering munitions and jet-powered drones. The latest versions of Patriot interceptors are capable of targeting short-range ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and drones at altitudes of up to 15 kilometers and at distances of up to 35 kilometers.
