Note on the structure: this originally appeared in the 1922 musical 'Oh Ernest' and
featured more lyrics
than the versions most of us are more familiar with today (see Jack Shea's version of
that same year).
Emmett Miller recorded it twice, once in 1925 as below with the 'chorus' part repeated,
and again in 1928
without the repeat but with a long spoken word/hokum intro. In all these cases, the
singing starts with the
"I'm in Love" bit. Rex Griffin's 1939 version jumbles it up to start with the "I got a
feelin' called the
blues" part as does Hank Williams' 1948 version. There are many other versions but I
first knew it from the
1974 Captain Matchbox one which I'm pretty sure was based on the Emmett Miller
recordings.
