Esta era de migração e colonização massiva foi particularmente encorajada pelo presidente Thomas Jefferson após a compra da Louisiana, dando origem à atitude expansionista conhecida como "destino manifesto" e à "Tese da Fronteira" dos historiadores. As lendas, os eventos históricos e o folclore da fronteira americana incorporaram-se tanto na cultura dos Estados Unidos que o Velho Oeste, e especificamente o género ocidental de mídia, tornou-se uma das características definidoras da identidade nacional americana.
