Brazil slaughters 2.4 million cattle in June with leadership from Mato Grosso

The rate of cattle slaughter remained high in Brazil in June 2026, according to data from SIGSIF (Management Information System of the Federal Inspection Service), from the Ministry of Agriculture. The survey indicates that slaughterhouses registered with the SIF (Federal Inspection Service) slaughtered 2.44 million cattle throughout the month throughout the country.

The national leadership went to Mato Grosso, which concentrated the largest volume of animals sent to industries, with 551.7 thousand heads slaughtered. Next comes Goiás, with 301.8 thousand animals, and Mato Grosso do Sul, with 286.2 thousand heads.

Among the main producing centers, São Paulo occupied the fourth position, with 265.9 thousand cattle slaughtered in June, followed by Rondônia, with 257.6 thousand animals, and Pará, with 220.9 thousand heads.

In Mato Grosso, the country's main beef producing state, the scenario is one of strong industrial activity. According to a survey by IMEA (Mato Grosso Institute of Agricultural Economics), the state recorded 3.65 million cattle slaughtered between January and June 2026, an increase of 3.58% compared to the same period last year and the highest volume ever recorded for a first half of the year.

The advance was driven mainly by males, with slaughters in this category growing by 13.05% in the annual comparison, reaching 1.81 million animals. The volume of females fell 4.26%, to 1.85 million heads.

According to Imea, the movement indicates a change in the dynamics of the livestock cycle, with less participation of sows in slaughter and greater availability of finished animals at this time. The institute also points out that international demand, especially from China, contributed to maintaining the industry's dispute over the purchase of ready-made cattle.

The Mato-Grossense Institute highlighted that the anticipation of shipments before the Chinese tariff quota was filled increased demand for animals in the first half of the year. In the coming months, however, the market should follow the effects of the reduction in the pace of exports to China after the use of the quota, while the lower availability of animals tends to limit supply in the second half of the year.

Mato Grosso do Sul

In Mato Grosso do Sul, the numbers point to a more adjusted scenario. Data monitored by Famasul (Federation of Agriculture and Livestock of the State of Mato Grosso do Sul) show that slaughterhouses with federal inspection slaughtered 275 thousand cattle in May, a volume practically stable in relation to April, but 4.8% lower than that recorded in the same month of 2025.

In the first five months of the year, the state had 1.38 million head slaughtered, a drop of 4.4% in the annual comparison.

The reduction also appears in the slaughter of females, which between January and May, 636.9 thousand cows were sent to industries, a decrease of 4.3% compared to the same period of the previous year. The category represented around 46% of the total slaughtered in the state.

The movement indicates a lower availability of animals for processing, especially given the matrix retention strategy observed in part of the livestock cycle.

Rio Grande do Sul

In Rio Grande do Sul, data from Fundesa (Animal Health Defense Fund or Agricultural Development Fund) shows a loss of intensity in the activity of slaughterhouses throughout the first half of the year.

The monthly slaughter volume fell from 171.5 thousand heads in March to 144.3 thousand in June.

The daily average also fell, from 7,966 animals in April to 6,870 in June.

The Rio Grande do Sul scenario follows a different dynamic than that observed in the Central-West, with a lower supply of animals and adjustments in the operation of industries in light of market conditions.
