The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock confirmed, this Monday (8), the first cases of greening (Huanglongbing - HLB) in citrus plants in Rio Grande do Sul.

The disease is caused by a bacteria transmitted by the psyllid Diaphorina citri, known to citrus growers for 20 years. It does not pose a risk to human health, but its impacts are extensive for rural production, causing fruit deformation, reduced quality and reduced plant productivity.

The detection is the result of a surveillance program carried out jointly by Mapa, through the Superintendency of Agriculture and Livestock in Rio Grande do Sul (SFA-RS), and by the State Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Sustainable Production and Irrigation (Seapi-RS), since 2004. Actions have been intensified in recent years due to the occurrence of the disease in Argentina, Uruguay and Santa Catarina.

The plants with symptoms of the disease were identified in a domestic orchard located in the municipality of Palmitinho, in the Médio Alto Uruguay region, close to the border with Santa Catarina. Confirmation was carried out after analyzes in a laboratory within the Ministry's network.

According to the Map, teams from the ministry and Seapi-RS are already mobilized in the region to monitor areas close to the site of the occurrence and adopt the necessary phytosanitary measures to prevent the spread of the disease. The actions follow the Action Plan established based on Ordinance SDA/Mapa nº 1,326/2025, which establishes the National Greening Control and Prevention Program.

Phytosanitary surveillance activities will also be intensified throughout the region, with special attention to commercial orchards and the transit of seedlings.

As determined by the phytosanitary protocol, the eradication of infected plants and strict control of the psyllid (Diaphorina citri), the insect that transmits the bacteria that causes greening, will be carried out.

What is greening?

Caused by a bacteria transmitted by the psyllid, the disease was first found in Asia more than 100 years ago. In Brazil, the first case was identified in Brazil in 2004, in São Paulo.

Today, it is present in all the citrus growing regions of São Paulo and orchards in Minas Gerais and Paraná, in addition to Argentina and Paraguay, in South America, in almost all countries in Central America and the Caribbean, and Mexico and the United States, in North America.

Both the bacteria and the psyllid reproduce in all types of citrus (oranges, tangerines, tangerines, sour limes and lemons).

Based on the Fundecitrus 2025 Greening Survey

(Citrus Defense Fund), the incidence of the disease in the citrus belt of São Paulo rose from 44.35% in 2024 to 47.63% in 2025, with an increase in the average severity of affected plants.
