Investments of resources from savings accounts exceeded withdrawals by R$2.6 billion in May, the Central Bank (BC) reported this Tuesday (9). This was the first inflow of resources in the traditional investment modality this year.
The BC does not inform the reason for the inflow of resources, but it happened in the same month as the start of Desenrola 2.0 - a program aimed at Brazilians indebted to the banking system who have a monthly income of up to five minimum wages, renegotiated R$ 20 billion. R$ 20 billion were renegotiated until the beginning of June.
With the inflow of resources in May, the stock of deposited amounts, that is, the total volume invested, increased. In April 2026, it was at R$1 trillion, rising to R$1.01 trillion at the end of May.
In this year's part, however, there was more outflow than inflow of resources into savings. In the first five months of 2026, with a rise in debt in the first months of the year, there was an evasion of R$39.1 billion from savings.
Low attractiveness of savings
Despite the inflow of resources in May, the savings account has shown little competitiveness in comparison with other financial applications, such as fixed income.
➡With the rules in force, savings have limited returns. When the Selic rate exceeds the level of 8.5% per year, the savings yield is 0.5% per month, plus the variation in the reference rate (TR, which is calculated by the weighted average of fixed-rate public bonds).
In a scenario of still high basic interest rates (14.5% per year), investments in fixed income, such as public bonds, corporate bonds and financial investments in CDI, for example, have performed better.
More risky investments, such as variable income, for example, also showed recovery in 2025. Last year, the São Paulo Stock Exchange index rose 34% - the biggest annual increase since 2016.
This year, the Ibovespa continues to perform well, with an accumulated increase of 4.5% (with Brazil standing out amid the war in the Middle East). The dollar, in turn, registered a drop of 5.6% in the partial 2026.
