Iranian team expects full house for World Cup debut in the USA
The ticket quota allocated to Iranian fans for the group stage of the World Cup was revoked a few days before the start of the tournament, the country's football federation reported.
The World Cup, hosted jointly by Canada, Mexico and the United States, starts on Thursday (11). Iran are scheduled to face New Zealand on June 15 and Belgium on June 21 - both matches in Los Angeles - before playing Egypt in Seattle on June 26.
Iranian football's governing body says FIFA regulations dictate that each federation participating in the World Cup receives 8% of the tickets from each of its matches to distribute to their fans.
The federation added that it had already started selling tickets but now cannot. making them available to fans, some of whom had already made travel plans.
"Depriving Iranian fans of access to their legal and official ticket quota is an action contrary to the spirit governing international competitions and the principle of equality between participating countries," FFIRI said in a statement.
"This development raises serious questions about the interference of non-sporting and political considerations in the organization of the world's biggest football event."
FFIRI also called on FIFA "to maintain the principles of neutrality, justice and respect for established regulations."
Iran's involvement in the World Cup has been marked by uncertainty, related to the ongoing war in the Middle East and associated security concerns.
On May 25, Iran moved its training base from Tucson, Arizona, to the Mexican city of Tijuana, claiming that the United States was unwilling to receive them.
Under the conditions of their visas, the Iranian delegation will have to enter and leave the United States on the days of each group stage match.
Less than two weeks later, on June 6, Iran accused the United States of denying visas to "essential" members of the national team's technical and administrative committee, with 15 managers and administrative staff being refused entry.
FFIRI had already presented to FIFA a list of 10 conditions for the country's participation in the World Cup, including authorization for players, coaches and officials who have completed military service with the Guard Corps Islamic Revolutionary League (IRGC) will be able to participate in the tournament.
United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio has stated that Iranian players will be welcome in the competition, but that individuals with ties to the IRGC may face restrictions on entry into the country.
Iran was the only country absent from FIFA's annual congress held in Vancouver in April after a delegation of FFIRI officials, including its president, Mehdi Taj, was prevented from entering the Canada through the country's immigration service.
