A new AI (Artificial Intelligence) platform has facilitated care for patients with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder). The technology's mission is to reduce time spent on therapists' routine procedures, such as updating medical records, scheduling and financial management, increasing the focus on clinical care.

The platform is called TABA, in reference to ABA, an acronym for Applied Behavior Analysis, considered today as the approach with the greatest scientific support for the treatment of autism.

The platform focuses on making care more targeted to the patient, better recording their clinical developments and even facilitating the monitoring of family members.

According to Claudio Franco, CEO of Tivita, the company responsible for technology, the use of AI already has a positive impact on the services of professionals who use the platform, providing greater transparency in communication.

Franco reports that therapists stopped spending hours and started dedicating just minutes on clinical bureaucracy during care, while clinics began to have more clarity on the evolution of each patient. The product was validated at the Autism Journey Congress in Rio de Janeiro.

"When experts in the field recognize the problem that you have solved, it is because the problem actually exists and the solution makes sense", he says.

The CEO, however, points out that technology does not replace the therapist, it just connects them better to the patient, something that could be developed technologically in other areas of medicine and therapies.

Therapeutic vision
The importance of the connection between patient and professional is something reinforced by Grazieli Nicolini, physiotherapist and specialist in neuropediatrics, and technical director at Neurokids Saúde e Reabilitação, a clinic that uses TABA.

According to the professional, ABA is the most effective science when talking about autism. For her, the analysis can be applied in corporate environments, for example, and helps maintain an exchange relationship regarding the routine of each person analyzed.

"There is a scientific basis that is common: the principles of behavior analysis apply to everyone. Positive reinforcement, functional analysis, data collection, generalization of skills. This does not change from patient to patient, it is the foundation of the approach", points out Graziele. "But the therapeutic plan is always individualized, without exception. Autism is a spectrum, and a true spectrum, it's not just a nice word", he continues.

Organization of information
The physiotherapist explains that the fact that it is based on data analysis means that ABA therapy requires more effective recording, something that can be facilitated with the use of technology.

"For a long time, many professionals needed to do this on paper, spreadsheets or notes made only after the session. And then important challenges arise: lost information, differences between team records and decisions made more by perception than by real data", he details.

"Nothing will replace the clinical perspective, that's obvious, but having technology as an ally to strengthen and facilitate the team's work is already very important, because professionals are able to dedicate themselves 100% to the child's development", he continues.

According to Nicolini, TABA began to add information organization, records of each patient's evolution and identification of patterns that impact families and school environments.

"There is also a point that I consider very special: technology helps to make good practices more accessible.

And in a scenario where the demand for ABA care is growing more and more, expanding access to quality makes a difference not only for clinics, but mainly for children and families who go through this process every day", he declares.

Origin of AI
AI was created to solve problems such as incomplete medical records, inconsistent progress reports, scattered data - something that was identified when it began to help multidisciplinary clinics to organize themselves better.

"In this close contact with clinics, especially those that care for patients diagnosed with the autism spectrum, we came to understand a very specific pain: ABA therapists live in a huge fragmentation of tools. They use a spreadsheet to record session data, another application for evaluation, another for reports, and sometimes they still rely on paper because the treatment room does not have adequate infrastructure for electronic recording (wi-fi, computers)", explains Claudio Franco.

Franco states that the change in the routine of professionals who work with ASD has meant that the focus of care is directed mainly to the patient.

"This fragmentation is not just an operational problem. It compromises clinical quality. When the therapist wastes time consolidating data from different sources, he has less time to think about the patient's evolution", he says.

"TABA was born from the desire to truly solve this, creating a platform that was designed from scratch for the reality of Brazilian ABA clinics, and not an adaptation of foreign software", he continues.

According to the CEO, therapists had an immediate gain during data collection, as there are six different registration methods in a system that does not necessarily need to be connected to the internet.

"But what we're most proud of is what happens after the collection. The platform uses artificial intelligence to automatically generate, or help the professional create, the patient's Individualized Educational Plan based on the assessments made, and also produces clinical summaries of each session. This saves the therapist hours of work every week and greatly reduces the risk of errors due to fatigue or forgetfulness", he details.
