Seu Jorge turns 56, remember the artist's work in music and on screen

Singer Seu Jorge turns 56 this Monday (8) with major productions under his belt, which alternate between music and the cinema screen. Born in Baixada Fluminense, the artist gained greater visibility in the 1990s, as one of the members of the band Farofa Carioca, which mixed samba, funk, jongo and pop, and, in 2001, he released his first solo album, "Samba Esporte Fino".

Owning an unmistakable voice, it was with "Músicas para Churrasco, Vol. 1", which includes hits such as "Burguesinha" and "Amiga da Minha Mulher", that the artist emerged as one of the great representatives of Brazilian music, including internationally.

The history of the artistic codename, Seu Jorge, is explained in different ways by friends such as Marcelo Yuka and Marcelo D2, who followed his emergence on the Brazilian music scene. According to Yuka, the nickname would be a reference to popular figures in Brazil, such as "Seu João da Padaria". For D2, on the other hand, the baptism would have occurred after a confusion between the three, when Yuka sent a telephone message saying that a "guy Jorge" was after him.

In cinema, he was present in great national classics such as "City of God", a feature film directed by Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund, in which he brought to life the iconic Mané Galinha. The role was his debut on the big screen and preceded a career as an actor who, like his music, tells the stories of popular characters from the daily lives of the Brazilian people.

The artist gave life to great national personalities, such as Pixinguinha (in "Pixinguinha, um Homem Carinhoso") and the former deputy and activist Carlos Marighella, murdered by the Military Dictatorship in "Marighella", a film directed by Wagner Moura that was censored in Brazil.

In Hollywood, the artist was Pelé dos Santos in Wes Anderson's "A Vida Marinha com Steve Zissou" and recreated David Bowie's classics in a bossa-nova version.
