Itatiaia National Park
Created in 1937, Itatiaia National Park is considered the 1st National Park in Brazil. Located in Serra da Mantiqueira, the site includes the municipalities of Itatiaia and Resende, in the State of Rio de Janeiro, as well as Bocaina de Minas and Itamonte, in the State of Minas Gerais.

At its highest point, known as Pico das Agulhas Negras, the area has an altitude that varies between 600 and 2,791 meters, with a relief formed by mountains and several rocky elevations. In the Planalto do Itatiaia region, or Parte Alta, it is possible to find high-altitude fields, in addition to suspended valleys, where several rivers originate.

In total, the National Park has springs from 12 important regional river basins, responsible for draining water into two basins: the Paraíba do Sul river, in Rio de Janeiro; and the Rio Grande, a tributary of the Paraná River.
