The opening match of the 2026 World Cup between Mexico and South Africa this Thursday (11) could be affected by a storm in Mexico City.


Mexican meteorological authorities have issued an orange alert indicating the possibility of torrential rain and storms, according to Portuguese newspaper A Bola.


Mexico City has recorded several episodes of flooding in recent days, increasing the concern of the tournament organizers.

The opening show is also planned with the singer Shakira, who also performs the official World Cup song alongside Burna Boy. So far, the organizers have not announced any changes to the program.


World Cup Format
In total, all countries were divided into 12 groups (A to L) of four teams each. They will face each other within the group, with the top two teams advancing to the knockout stages. Additionally, eight of the 12 third-place finishers will also move on to the World Cup.


Unlike other editions, the 2026 World Cup knockout stages will have a phase prior to the round of 16, with the 32 best teams remaining alive in the fight for the title. There will be 104 matches in total, 40 more than in 2022, in Qatar.

After advancing through 16th, round of 16, quarter and semi-finals, two teams will reach the final of the competition on July 19, 2026. The duel will take place at MetLife Stadium, in East Rutherford, in the United States.
