The arrival of a cold front in the south of Brazil should change the weather scenario in much of the center-south of the country this week.

According to Climatempo, the system begins to operate from this Monday (8) and will favor the return of rain in states such as Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Paraná, Mato Grosso do Sul, São Paulo, Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro.

The change in weather occurs due to the action of a trough in the middle levels of the atmosphere, associated with the formation of an area of low pressure and a process of cyclogenesis over the South Region. The combination of these factors increases atmospheric instability and creates conditions for heavy rain showers, isolated thunderstorms, gusts of wind and eventual hail.

The first impacts will be felt in Rio Grande do Sul, where areas of instability are expected to spread throughout this Monday. The forecast indicates moderate to heavy rain in several regions of the state, including Porto Alegre, Santa Maria, Pelotas and Uruguaiana. There is also an alert for municipalities in the Missões and Campanha Gaúcha regions.

Throughout the day, instability advances towards Santa Catarina, mainly affecting the west and interior of the state. Cities such as Chapecó, Concórdia, Xanxerê and Lages are among the areas with the greatest potential for intense rain.

On Tuesday (9), the cold front gains strength over Paraná. The forecast indicates showers distributed throughout the day, especially in the west, southwest and south regions of the state. Municipalities such as Cascavel, Foz do Iguaçu, Guarapuava and Pato Branco are expected to register an increase in cloudiness and rain.

From mid-week onwards, instability is expected to reach areas of the Central-West and Southeast.

Between Tuesday and Wednesday, the south of Mato Grosso do Sul enters the storm route, favored by the transport of heat and humidity to the interior of the continent. The cities of Ponta Porã, Dourados, Naviraí and Mundo Novo are among those that may record moderate to heavy rain. The increase in humidity should also favor the return of precipitation in Mato Grosso, including in the capital Cuiabá, between Wednesday (10) and Thursday (11).

In the Southeast, the highest volumes are expected in the second half of the week. The forecast indicates rain for several areas in the interior of São Paulo, southern Minas Gerais and the state of Rio de Janeiro. In São Paulo, cities such as Presidente Prudente, Marília, Bauru, Campinas and Sorocaba are in the area of attention. In Minas Gerais, instability is expected to affect municipalities such as Uberaba, Uberlândia, Poços de Caldas and Belo Horizonte. In Rio de Janeiro, the capital and cities in the Mountain Region, such as Petrópolis, may experience heavy showers and isolated storms.

Climatempo also highlights the possibility of rain in Goiás and the Federal District at the end of the week. The scenario is considered unusual for this time of year, marked by the dry period in the region.

Mass of cold air can cause frost
In addition to the rain, the passage of the cold front will open the way for the entry of a mass of cold air that should bring down temperatures in the South and part of the Southeast.

The forecast indicates favorable conditions for the formation of frost in higher altitude areas of Serra Gaúcha, Serra Catarinense, southern Paraná, high points in the interior of São Paulo and Serra da Mantiqueira.

The greatest risks are concentrated in lowland regions and mountainous areas, where thermometers can register temperatures close to or below 4°C during the early hours of the morning.

Strong winds and rough seas
Another highlight of the week will be the increase in wind intensity in the coastal areas of the South and Southeast.

According to Climatempo, the development of a new cyclone associated with the low pressure system could cause significant gusts along the coast.

The phenomenon should especially affect the coast of Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Paraná, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, requiring attention from fishermen, navigators and port operators.

On the coast of Rio Grande do Sul, the sea is expected to remain rough, with the possibility of undertows and waves between two and three meters high, increasing the risks for maritime activities and coastal areas.
