The Israel Defense Forces stated that they attacked military targets in the western and central regions of Iran in the early hours of Monday (8) local time.

Iranian news outlets, such as the Mehr News news agency, have reported sounds of explosions in Iran's capital, Tehran.

Reports in local media also point to the sounds of explosions being heard near Karaj, west of Tehran.

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard would also have made reports to this effect in Tabriz, close to the border with Azerbaijan, and in Isfahan, in the central region of the country.

The attacks, according to the Revolutionary Guard, would have been carried out by Israel using "air-launched ballistic missiles" - in other words: they would have come from aircraft.

The attack comes hours after the Islamic Republic fired missiles at Israel in retaliation for an Israeli offensive in the region of Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, against the paramilitary group Hezbollah, supported by Tehran.

Iran has not attacked Israel directly since the beginning of the ceasefire currently in effect in the Middle East.

Israel said it had managed to intercept Iran's attacks, which would have been carried out in at least two waves of missiles.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, one of Iran's military arms, issued a statement warning Israel to cease attacks on Lebanon and said that if the Israelis responded militarily, they would face "even more devastating blows."

Israel's attack on Iran goes against calls from US President Donald Trump to de-escalate the conflict in the Middle East.

Soon after the Iranian attacks, Trump gave a series of statements to the press.

On American broadcaster Fox News, Trump said that an agreement with Iran to end the ongoing war in the Middle East is "very close" to being signed and sent a message to Iran: "You launched your missiles. Enough is enough. Now go back to the negotiating table and make a deal."

Regarding Israel's earlier attacks on the outskirts of Beirut, Trump said he was "not happy about it at all."

Trump also spoke to the Axios portal and said he would call Benjamin Netanyahu asking the Prime Minister of Israel not to retaliate for Iran's attack.

"Every one of them had fun. Israel had its attack and Iran had its attack. We don't need another one," he told Axios, asserting that the Iranian attacks "didn't hurt anyone."

"If Bibi (Netanyahu's nickname) fights back, this will continue as it has for the last 47 years - or the last 3,000 years," he said. "I don't want it (agreement) to fail because of what's happening now," he said.

And to the British newspaper Financial Times, Trump stated that Netanyahu "will have no choice" if he does not accept any agreement that the US signs with Iran.

"I'm in charge. I make all the decisions. He (Netanyahu) doesn't control anything", he added.
