From the field to politics: understand the discomfort between James Rodríguez and Petro on the eve of the World Cup
James Rodríguez (on the left), player of the Colombia national football team, greets Gustavo Petro (in yellow shirt),...However, Corinthians, at that opportunity, backed down and did not want to bring Endrick to their base, due to the costs of bringing the player and his family from Brasília, his hometown, to São Paulo: "It wasn't just São Paulo (which missed the opportunity to sign him). São Paulo, Corinthians, Santos and other clubs. This happened in the 2016 Go Cup. My son played for BFA/São Paulo (Brasília team). Endrick was a highlight of the competition. And there was a Corinthians recruiter who, after we came to Palmeiras in 2017, went to work at Palmeiras. He told me this story."

The 2016 edition of the Go Cup had more than 1,700 children between 7 and 12 years old, responsible for representing 12 countries spread across five continents. At the time, after standing out in the tournament, Palmeiras was the team that brought the athlete to its youth categories, in addition to providing financial assistance for his family and giving his father, Douglas Sousa, a job opportunity.
"At the time, he scouted Endrick, came to the people at Corinthians and said: 'There's a boy like that, different. I think it's worth the investment and you could try to see how to bring the family to São Paulo'. Then he told me that the people at Corinthians responded that it would be unfeasible to bring the family from Brasília to São Paulo, because Endrick, me and my ex-wife would come. So it would be unfeasible to bring the family from Brasília to São Paulo", he revealed.
Corinthians, at that time, was chaired by Roberto de Andrade and the youth teams were directed by José Onofre de Souza Almeida and Fausto Bittar Filho. At Palmeiras, Endrick became the main promise of the youth teams and, at just 16 years old, was promoted to the Alviverde main squad. His first opportunities appeared at the end of 2022, but the following year he reached his peak, being decisive in winning the 2023 Brasileirão by the Barra Funda team.
He was also a regular in the Brazilian youth teams' squads. At Alviverde, there were 21 goals and eight assists in 82 games. In mid-2024, it was sold to Real Madrid, from Spain, for 72 million euros, around R$409 million at the time.
With the strong competition in the merengue team, he ended up being loaned to Lyon, in France, in the middle of last season, aiming to have minutes to be called up by Brazil in the World Cup. On French soil, there were eight goals and seven passes for goals in 21 games. For 2026/2027, Endrick will be reinstated to the Madrid team.
The outstanding performance for the French team earned the player a call-up for the 2026 World Cup, fulfilling his objective of gaining opportunities at Lyon. Last Saturday afternoon (6), he even scored the goal that gave Brazil a 2-1 victory in the friendly against Egypt. The number 19 came off the bench and decided the match in favor of Amarelinha.
