Elections in Peru: Meet the candidates who will contest the 2nd round

Peru is holding the second round of the presidential election this Sunday (7), putting conservative Keiko Fujimori and Roberto Sánchez, from the left, face to face.

In the first round, on April 12, Fujimori led the vote with 17.2%, five percentage points ahead of Sánchez. The results were only confirmed after more than a month of investigation.

Now, the two candidates are technically tied in voting intentions, according to an Ipsos survey carried out at the end of May: 38% of those who participated in the survey said they would vote for the conservative, while 35% said they would choose the representative from the left.

Who is Keiko Fujimori?
Keiko Fujimori is 50 years old. She was born in Lima, on May 25, 1975, and is the eldest of four children of Alberto Fujimori, who passed away in 2024, and Susana Higuchi, who passed away in 2021.

In a video published on her YouTube channel, she says that, when she was young, she didn't think about going into politics, but rather about being a businesswoman. Therefore, he studied Business Administration and later completed a master's degree in the United States.

In 2007, when she was a parliamentarian, her father was extradited from Chile to Peru, where, in 2009, he was sentenced to 25 years in prison for qualified homicide and serious injuries in the Barrios Altos and La Cantuta cases.

Since then, both the former president and his family have rejected the accusations and fought for his freedom, which he obtained in December 2023, after the Peruvian Constitutional Court validated the humanitarian pardon that then-president Pedro Pablo Kuczynski had granted him in 2017.

This is the fourth time he has run for President, and in all these elections he has gone to the second round.

Who is Roberto Sánchez?
Roberto Sánchez, 57 years old, studied Social Psychology at the National University of San Marcos, in Lima, and worked as an individual and group psychotherapist in the 1990s.

He has experience in public administration at the Ministry of Health and other areas of the Peruvian government, as well as private consultancy, depending on his professional profile.

He served as Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism during the Castillo government, from whom he has explicit support, and was elected to Congress in the 2021 elections for a term until 2026.

Candidate for Juntos por el Perú, he sought to win the rural vote, a fundamental segment to overcome the initial disadvantage in the vote count.

Sánchez defines himself as the "Castilista presidential candidate". He seeks to rehabilitate and release former president Pedro Castillo, who governed the country between 2021 and 2022 and is currently serving a prison sentence for conspiracy to commit rebellion, charges he denies.
