EU vetoes meat from Brazil from September 3rd
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE) intensified conversations with representatives of the European Union in an attempt to unlock negotiations on the exclusion of Brazilian meat from the list of importers due to the excessive use of antimicrobials in livestock farming.
➡ Antimicrobials are substances used to treat and prevent infections in animals. Some of these medicines can also function as growth promoters.
According to interlocutors at the Itamaraty Palace, minister Mauro Vieira spoke, last Thursday (4), with the European bloc's Trade Commissioner about the matter.
The information was verified by reporter Vladimir Netto, from TV Globo. The government is working to try to reverse the decision, at least partially, until it comes into force in September.
At the same time, the Ministry of Agriculture and the private sector are looking for technical solutions to offer the guarantees that the Europeans requested, that is, in-person technical visits to breeding sites.
European Union formalizes the exclusion of Brazil
This Friday (5), the European Union (EU) published a document officializing its decision to exclude Brazil from the list of countries that comply with the bloc's rules against excessive use of antimicrobials in livestock farming.
In the previous list, from 2024, Brazil appeared as authorized to export beef, chicken and horse meat, as well as tripe, fish and honey. Now, the country appears excluded from the list of all these products.
Other Mercosur countries, such as Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay, remain authorized to export to the EU.
According to the document published on Friday, the country did not present information required by the European Commission that guarantees that Brazilian meat meets EU requirements on antimicrobials.
When the bloc announced its decision, in early May, the spokesperson for the European Commission for Health, Eva Hrncirova, stated that Brazil can return to the list as soon as it meets the required requirements.
The Brazilian government, in turn, said, at the time, that it was surprised by the decision and that it would negotiate. Brazil was the only country that was removed from the list for not presenting information required by the EU.
Another three countries were removed from the EU list, but because they were no longer interested in exporting products to the bloc. This is the case in Australia, for eggs; from Ukraine, for rabbits; and the Falkland Islands, for aquaculture products.
On the other hand, the EU includes 21 countries and territories on the list. They are: Armenia, Burkina Faso, Benin, Brunei, Belize, Guernsey, India, Indonesia, Iran, Kenya, Kyrgyz Republic, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Nigeria, Serbia, Eswatini, Tunisia, Tanzania, Uganda, Uzbekistan and Wallis and Futuna.
