The autopsy of the humpback whale known as "Timmy", found dead on the Danish island of Anholt, confirmed that the animal was a female. The examination, carried out over several hours, was completed on Thursday night (06/04), but was unable to determine the cause of death.
On Friday morning, the whale's remains had already been removed from the beach, according to information from broadcaster TV2, based on data from Danish environmental authorities. Now, all that remains is the final transportation of the waste, scheduled to take place in the next few days.
Examination found no explanation for death
Teams of specialists began the autopsy using protective clothing due to the animal's advanced state of decomposition. Initially, the body - already with altered color and swollen by gases - was measured and analyzed externally.

Next, the technicians opened the corpse to release the gases and allow internal inspection. During the procedure, the carcass was cut into parts, with organs exposed around it.
Despite thorough analysis, no obvious injuries were identified that could explain the death. Experts indicate that this is common in similar cases, especially when there is advanced decomposition.
Parasites were found in the kidneys, but are not considered responsible for the death. There were also no fishing nets or objects in the whale's stomach or mouth.

Procedure has scientific value
The identification of the uterus confirmed that the animal was a female, which was previously suspected. The tests also indicated that she had not been pregnant recently.
Samples of organs such as the liver and kidneys were collected, which will undergo laboratory analysis. The results could take months.
Despite the lack of a conclusive cause, the researchers highlight the importance of the examination.
According to biologist Charlotte Bie Thostesen, humpback whales are difficult to study in the open sea, and strandings offer rare research opportunities.
After the autopsy was completed, parts of the carcass were removed with the help of heavy equipment and stored in containers. The team left the island the following morning.
Destination of remains
Waste must be transported and processed by specialized companies. Part of the material, however, will be preserved for scientific purposes.
Some bones, such as those of the fins and pelvic structures, should be part of the collection of the Natural History Museum in Copenhagen.
Whale stranded in Germany is released after dramatic rescue operation
Drama of international repercussion
The case of the whale Timmy has gained international attention in recent weeks after a sequence of strandings and a rescue attempt considered unusual in the Europe.
The whale had been seen for the first time in March 2026 on the coast of the Baltic Sea, in Germany, a region outside its natural habitat, which is normally the Atlantic.
For weeks, the animal was trapped in shallow waters, running aground repeatedly and showing signs of weakness. Experts believe he could be disoriented, sick or following shoals outside his usual route.
In the face of public commotion and pressure to save him, a large-scale rescue operation was organized, with financing from millionaires. The whale was transported on a barge with water to the North Sea, being released into the high seas in early May, around 70 kilometers from the Danish coast.
Despite the efforts, experts were already warning that the chances of survival were reduced, due to the long period in shallow waters and the animal's physical wear and tear.
A few days after release, the whale was found dead near the island of Anholt, in Denmark.

The identity was later confirmed using a tracking device attached to the body.

Case sparked debate
The case sparked debate among scientists and authorities about interventions of this type. While part of society supported the rescue attempt, some experts criticized the operation, assessing that the animal had little real chance of recovery.
Still, episodes like Timmy's help draw attention to the risks faced by whales in regions impacted by human activity, including climate change, intensive fishing and noise pollution.
Now, with the autopsy completed and laboratory analyzes underway, researchers hope that the case will contribute to expanding knowledge about the species and guide future decisions in similar situations.
