Naturally, with the advancement of technologies and market movements, automakers tend to discontinue models considered inefficient or insufficient, whether due to the aging of onboard technology or even the volatile and unpredictable movement of the automotive market.

And iconic cars - loved by enthusiasts or driven by three generations of the same family - do not emerge unscathed from this feature, which is being widely used by more traditional automakers; much due to the recent sting they took from the Chinese giants and the electrification of the market.

Check out below some of the models that leave us with the year 2026, indefinitely, and that made a mark on the global automotive industry in their respective segments.

Audi RS7

Audi RS7 Performance - Disclosure / Audi
Confirmed as the latest launch of Audi's A7 line, the vehicle enters the "top of the sedan food chain" category alongside the BMW M8 GranCoupé and the old Mercedes GT63 Four Door. The RS7 has a 4.0L V8 Biturbo, which delivers 630 hp and 850 Nm of torque without electrical assistance, and joins its brothers at the end of production with the end of the 2026 model year.

Those looking for a fun German sedan for next year will have to settle for the new A6 e-tron or its younger smaller brother, the new RS5 (V6 PHEV).

VW ID.4

Volkswagen ID.4 - Disclosure / VW
Technically, the ID.4 will no longer be produced in 2027, but, in reality, what could happen is a brief hiatus for the platform. What the German giant intends to do is recycle the model in the not-so-distant future, giving it a different, more appealing name: ID.Tiguan, following the ID.Polo trend and recent rumors.

Toyota Supra (MK 5)

Toyota GR Supra 2026 - Disclosure / Toyota
Toyota has retired the Supra name again, just seven years after relaunching it. Officially known as the GR Supra, Toyota's sports coupe, launched in 2020, marked the return of a model that had been discontinued in the United States for more than 20 years. Now, the model says goodbye once again with the end of the 2026 model year.

BMW Z4

BMW Z4 M40i (latest generation) - Uwe Fischer / BMW
Those looking for a small new convertible will have one less option on the market from 2027. As a replacement for the historic Z3, the Z4 has gone through three surprisingly long-lived generations, completing more than two decades of production. In this latest generation, it even provided its platform and mechanical set for the Toyota Supra MK 5, its Japanese twin, establishing itself as a very successful engineering project and product in general.

The one who gains most from this is Porsche, as its "sporty baby" Boxster loses one of its main competitors in the small convertible market.

BMW 8 Series

BMW M8 Competition Gran Coupé - Disclosure / BMW
BMW's "top of the sedan food chain" line falls in 2027 alongside its most direct competitor: Audi's A7 line. The market is sending a clear message to automakers and they are listening. But not everything is so cloudy - BMW has already hinted at a possible resurrection of the line in the not-so-distant future. The question now is whether Series 8 will return in the same format it left off.

The bets on a new range of engines, ranging from turbocharged 4-cylinders in the entry-level versions to the V6 PHEV in the M versions, are growing more and more, and the immediate appeal of this new proposal is not certain.

BMW iX

BMW iX The model has gained a lot of space in the market, thanks to its wide range, comfort and innovative cabin. The car will be discontinued in the United States at the end of this year, with the same expected to happen in the rest of the Americas.

Lexus LS

Lexus LS 500h - Disclosure / Lexus
Lexus announces the discontinuation of the model that effectively transformed the Japanese luxury brand into the powerhouse it is today.

The top-of-the-line sedan that "democratized" luxury in the USA in the 1980s, and overturned the stigma that only Europeans had cutting-edge engineering, will no longer be produced in 2027. As a result, Lexus's sedan lineup is reduced to just two models: the compact IS and the midsize ES.

Lexus LC500

Lexus LC 500 2026 - Disclosure / Lexus
Almost a decade after its launch, the design of the Lexus LC 500 still fits surprisingly well in the current market. 2026 marks the end of the line for the coupe and convertible, which boasts its naturally aspirated 5.0L V8 engine with one of the meanest growls available in a brand new car. The LC joins the IS F, RC F and LFA in Lexus' historic hall of fame.

Volvo V90

Volvo V90 Stationwagon - Disclosure / Volvo
Volvo's station wagon line continues to shrink with the end of the V90, its largest station wagon. Although the Swedish automaker discontinued the conventional V90 a few years ago, it continued to offer the model in the Cross Country version, with SUV characteristics. This all ends in 2027, when Volvo will officially end production of its largest station wagon, a symbol of the category around the world.

Jaguar F-Pace

Jaguar F-Pace - Disclosure / Jaguar
Jaguar's last remaining model, which is undergoing a rebrand and complete product review, will be discontinued in 2027, leaving the English company's model line - literally - non-existent until the Type 01, an as-yet-unrevealed 100% electric sedan, enters production (scheduled for 2028).

Tesla Model S

Tesla Model S 2026 - Disclosure / Tesla
The Model S was not Tesla's first fully electric vehicle - with only the Roadster as an older brother -, but it was the one that established the brand's legitimacy in the American and global market. After more than a decade on the market (and several updates throughout its life cycle), the Model S will be discontinued at the end of 2026.

Tesla Model X

Tesla Model Its discontinuation also marks the end of Tesla's three-row SUV era, at least for now. There are rumors that Tesla plans to launch, in the near future, a larger variant of its current midsize SUV, the Model Y, with three rows of seats, to fill the hole left by the X.
