The discussion about who the greatest living composers of music are has gained a new controversial chapter. A list released by The New York Times, based on reader voting, placed Taylor Swift ahead of giant names like Kendrick Lamar and Lauryn Hill, sparking intense debates on social media.

The singer appears in 7th position in the ranking of the 100 greatest living North American composers. Ahead of him are only Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Bruce Springsteen, Carole King, Billy Joel and Stevie Wonder.

In the Top 10, Taylor still appears above established names such as Dolly Parton, James Taylor and Willie Nelson. Kendrick Lamar, one of the most respected artists in contemporary rap, was in 17th position, behind names like Tom Waits, David Byrne and Stevie Nicks.

The placement reignited an old discussion: what defines a great songwriter? For many fans, Taylor Swift deserves to be highlighted for her ability to transform personal experiences, loves, disappointments, growing up and everyday observations into popular songs that cross generations. His direct, emotional and highly connected writing with the public has become a trademark.

On the other hand, Kendrick Lamar is often celebrated for his lyrical depth, narrative construction and the way he addresses social, racial, political and existential issues in his records. The rapper is the only artist of the genre to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music, a feat that reinforces his artistic and literary weight.

The list also raises an important question about popular voting. In rankings open to the public, fan engagement can have a huge influence on the final result. In Taylor's case, the strength of Swifties certainly helps explain her high presence on the list.
