The meeting between Guns N' Roses and Rolling Stones in the late 1980s went down in history not only because of the weight of the names involved, but also because of a bold negotiation that showed the size of the commercial strength of the band led by Axl Rose.

In 1989, the Rolling Stones were preparing one of their most ambitious tours, created to promote the album "Steel Wheels". The tour had a grandiose production and sought to reaffirm the supremacy of Mick Jagger's band on stage, at a time when stadium rock moved crowds and million-dollar figures.

In that same period, Guns N' Roses experienced an explosive rise. After the impact of "Appetite for Destruction", the group was no longer just a hard rock promise: it was a powerhouse capable of attracting crowds on its own, with enough energy, chaos and popular appeal to fill large arenas.

Therefore, when the possibility of Guns opening four Rolling Stones shows at the Los Angeles Coliseum arose, the proposal was carefully analyzed by the band's then manager, Alan Niven. For him, it didn't make much sense to put his musicians in the role of opening act, since Guns N' Roses represented the new generation of rock and roll at its hottest.

Niven also had doubts about the band's ability to face a tour of that magnitude. Still, he realized that the Rolling Stones needed a strong attraction to guarantee the impact of the four nights at the Coliseum.

The initial offer was US$500,000, around R$2.5 million at the current rate, for the four performances. Instead of accepting immediately, Alan Niven decided to raise the price. When the Stones' representative suggested formulas with bonuses and incentives, he refused and was direct: the fee would have to be US$1 million, more than R$5 million currently.

According to Niven, the reaction was shock. Even so, Mick Jagger accepted the demand, understanding that the presence of Guns N' Roses was decisive in making those nights even stronger commercially.

The episode shows how, in 1989, Guns N' Roses had stopped being just a band on the rise. The group was a force in global rock, capable of negotiating on an equal footing with absolute legends like the Rolling Stones.

In the end, the investment was worth it. The performances went down in history as a portrait of a time when two generations of rock met on the same stage: on one side, the veterans who had helped shape the genre; on the other, the band that carried the chaos, attitude and spirit of the turn of the 80s into the 90s.
