The strategic partnership between the Swedish company Saab and Embraer could transform Brazil into a Gripen fighter production hub in Latin America. The Swedish company already has plans to expand its production in Brazilian territory, in order to support production for current and future customers.
According to Saab's president and CEO, Micael Johansson, the company is considering using the maximum capacity of the Embraer plant to fulfill the contract signed with Colombia. The agreement reached with the Colombian government foresees the delivery of 17 Gripen combat aircraft between 2026 and 2032.
The contract includes 15 single-seat (one-seat) Gripen E fighters and two two-seat (two-seat) Gripen F fighters, as well as associated equipment and armaments, training and services. The order value is 3.1 billion euros.

Almost 500 kg of drugs valued at R$10 million are seized in SP

So, of course, I mean, we're going to do as much of the Colombian contract as possible in Brazil. That's obviously a very smart way of doing it," Johansson told reporters.
In addition to the Colombian contract, Brazil may also benefit from the sale of jets being negotiated between Sweden and Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced his intention to purchase 20 new Gripen E fighters produced by the Swedish company Saab.
Despite the formal announcement by the Swedish and Ukrainian governments, there is no contract signed yet between the parties. The acquisition of 20 aircraft will be possible after the European Union approved a 90 billion euro loan for Ukraine.

"We have not yet selected exactly where the Ukrainian aircraft will be manufactured, but these are the hubs [Linköping and Gavião Peixoto] that we have. Therefore, the demand for the manufacture of fighters will occur both in Brazil and in Linköping, Sweden", declared the CEO.

Swedish-Brazilian partnership
Saab has an agreement with Brazil that allows the sharing of information and Swedish defense technology with Embraer. In March, the Brazilian company presented the first Gripen E fighter produced entirely on Brazilian soil.
The exchange of information between Brazil and Sweden involved an extensive training program with hundreds of Brazilian experts. Engineers, technicians, assembly and maintenance operators underwent theoretical and practical training that involved flight testing, production and maintenance of the Gripen.
In total, 15 of the 36 Saab aircraft acquired by the FAB (Brazilian Air Force) will have their final assembly carried out on Brazilian soil, at the Embraer plant in Gavião Peixoto (SP). Deliveries are expected to be completed in 2032.
In addition to Embraer, Brazilian companies such as AEL Sistemas and Atech also participate in the production of avionics systems, structures and strategic components for the Swedish company.
"Demand in the market is increasing for several reasons, due to the geopolitical tensions we have. So, of course, we are very happy to have another hub to expand. We will expand capacity here in Linköping, but we will also expand capacity in Brazil", said the CEO.
