Miguel Díaz-Canel, president of Cuba, says he is ready to defend the country from the United States during the 65th anniversary of the victory of the invasion in the Bay of Pigs
ADALBERTO ROQUE / AFP
The United States announced this Thursday (4) new sanctions against the president of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, in yet another move to increase pressure on the island's government.
According to the US Treasury Department, the measures reach Díaz-Canel, his wife and members of the Castro family. Four other people and five entities were also sanctioned, including the Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Cuba.

Among the new targets of sanctions are Alejandro Castro Espín, son of Raúl Castro; his grandson, Raúl Alejandro Castro; and Manuel Anido Cuesta.
Díaz-Canel, 60, has been president of Cuba since 2018, when he took over from Raúl Castro, brother of former Cuban leader Fidel Castro.
This Thursday's action is Washington's latest initiative to intensify pressure on the island's communist leaders.
The sanctions were announced while the President of the United States, Donald Trump, told the press that he wanted Cuba "to be a well-managed country."
Díaz-Canel had already been sanctioned in July last year due to the repression of popular protests that took place in 2021.
Last month, the American government imposed sanctions on 11 Cuban officials, including the Minister of Communications, several military leaders and the country's main intelligence agency.
The United States also accused Raúl Castro of murder for his alleged involvement in an incident that occurred in 1996, when Cuban jets shot down planes operated by a group of Cuban exiles.
The Cuban government did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the new sanctions.
