This Thursday, June 4th, Corpus Christi is celebrated - Solemnity of the Blessed Sacrament of the Body and Blood of Christ - a traditional date in the Catholic calendar.

Among the highlights of the celebration is the making of the famous ornate carpets made with colored sawdust, flowers and other materials.

Created in the mid-13th century, the tradition was inspired by the faithful who decorated the streets where the Blessed Sacrament passed in procession - one of the greatest public expressions of Catholic faith.

The cities of Itaquaquecetuba, Santa Isabel and Santana da Parnaíba will also make the carpets, transforming the streets into scenes of art and religiosity.

Bahia
The Archdiocese of São Salvador da Bahia published the schedule for this Thursday (4). In the Primal See of the Church, the Archbishop of São Salvador da Bahia, Primate of Brazil, Cardinal Dom Sergio da Rocha, will preside over the Solemn Mass in the Cathedral Basilica of the Most Holy Savior, at 8am, which will be preceded by the Prayer of Lauds at 7:20am.

Soon after the Eucharistic Celebration, the faithful will go out in procession with the Blessed Sacrament, through the streets of the Historic Center, to the Archdiocesan Sanctuary of Santo Antônio Além do Carmo.

The making of the carpet was carried out by the Group of Young People for Jesus, in the Parish of Nossa Senhora da Penha de França, in Ribeira (BA).

Rio de Janeiro
At the Cristo Redentor Sanctuary, the traditional Corpus Christi carpet gained new meanings. In 2026, the celebration combines spirituality, sustainability, art and social transformation in an unprecedented project, developed using the patchwork technique, which joins different pieces of fabric to form larger compositions, with a variety of colors, shapes and prints.

The celebration of Corpus Christi Day at the Cristo Redentor Sanctuary will have Adoration and Blessing of the Blessed Sacrament, presided over by the Archbishop of Rio de Janeiro, Cardinal Orani João Tempesta, at 6:30 am this Thursday (4).

The carpet began to be assembled at 3am today (4). With more than 30 meters in length, it is being made over 25 collaborative workshops, carried out in around 2 months. More than 300 kilos of fabrics were collected through campaigns and partnerships.

In addition to the artistic and ecological aspect, the project has a profound social dimension.

The carpet is built by the hands of women in socially vulnerable situations, assisted by the social projects of Consórcio Cristo Sustentável.

Women from different regions of Rio de Janeiro and Greater Rio participate, such as Seropédica, Nova Iguaçu, Madureira, Irajá, Rocinha, Horto, Cidade de Deus, Santa Teresa, Rio das Pedras and São Gonçalo.

The project was inspired by the principles of the circular economy and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), proposed by the United Nations (UN).

According to the Sanctuary, to date, no records have been found in the world of a Corpus Christi Carpet made entirely using the patchwork technique, making the initiative pioneering and of great symbolic value.
