José Mourinho filed a complaint with the European Court of Human Rights against the disciplinary sanctions he received when he was coach of Fenerbahçe, in Türkiye.

According to a statement published by the court, based in Strasbourg, the Portuguese coach's action was accepted for analysis on June 1, and the Turkish government was invited to comment on the case.

Mourinho is contesting a fine of 600,000 Turkish liras (around R$106,000) and a one-match suspension, which prevented him from remaining in the dressing room and technical area. The punishments were applied by the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) after Fenerbahçe's 3-2 victory over Trabzonspor, in the Super Lig, on November 3, 2024.

The federation punished the coach for unsportsmanlike behavior directed at the opposing fans during the match and for subsequent statements criticizing the level of refereeing.

In that game, Trabzonspor received two penalties in the second half after interventions by the video referee (VAR). With the score tied at 2-2, Mourinho expressed irritation after a foul on one of his players was not called.

After the match, the coach stated that video referee Atilla Karaoglan had not noticed the move and declared that the Turkish Championship "stinks", adding that international fans had no reason to follow the competition.

The Turkish Football Federation claimed that Mourinho's comments were aimed at "damaging the TFF's reputation, reducing the value of Turkish football and casting doubt on the impartiality of referees and other competition officials".

In the appeal presented to the European Court, Mourinho maintains that his right to a fair trial was violated, arguing that the federation's disciplinary and arbitration committees do not have independence in relation to the entity's president and board of directors.

The 63-year-old coach also claims that his right to a duly reasoned decision was violated, alleging that the federation did not formally present complete justifications for the punishment.

In addition, Mourinho argues that the sanctions harmed his freedom of expression, by punishing him for expressing opinions about the arbitration.

The European Court requested that the Turkish authorities clarify whether the federation's disciplinary bodies acted independently and impartially and whether there was an adequate balance between the coach's freedom of expression and the interests of the sporting entity.

After leaving Fenerbahçe following their elimination in the Champions League playoffs in August, Mourinho took over Benfica. In recent months, however, his name has also been linked to a possible return to Real Madrid.
