Israel says it will continue operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon despite ceasefire extension
Israeli strikes killed at least four people in Lebanon, according to local authorities, and a UN peacekeeper was killed in the crossfire this Thursday. The latest wave of violence followed the announcement of yet another ceasefire agreement in clashes between Israel and the Iranian-backed militant group Hezbollah.
Ongoing fighting in Lebanon, where Israeli forces have seized large swathes of the south, threatens efforts to end the war with Iran and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a key transit point for oil and gas, the closure of which has shaken the world economy.

Iran demanded that any lasting truce extend to Lebanon. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who faces elections later this year, wants to continue Israel's offensive until Hezbollah no longer poses a threat.
Israeli troops have seized about a fifth of Lebanon since Hezbollah began launching rocket and drone attacks in solidarity with Iran days after the armed conflict began.
US President Donald Trump, who faced a rare rebuke from Congress on Wednesday, sought to downplay the diplomatic impasse and the failure of declared ceasefires to end the fighting, telling reporters that in the Middle East, "a ceasefire is when you shoot from in a more moderate way."

The head of Lebanese Hezbollah, Naim Qassem, said on Thursday (4) that as long as Lebanese villages are bombed and people are killed, northern Israel will not be safe.
Peacekeeper killed in crossfire
A Serbian peacekeeper was killed and two others were injured when a mortar shell hit their position near Marjayoun, a predominantly Christian town that has been the scene of intense fighting, according to the UN mission, known as UNIFIL, and Serbia's Defense Ministry.
Neither said whether the mortar attack came from Israel or Hezbollah.
Lebanon's state-run National News Agency reported that a drone attack killed a motorcyclist and injured four people in the village of Maaroub. The agency also reported airstrikes on the village of Sohmor in the Bekaa Valley in eastern Lebanon that killed three people and injured others. In addition, air strikes were reported in other areas of the south of the country.
There was no immediate comment from the Israeli armed forces, who warned the population not to enter areas of southern Lebanon where, according to them, they are attacking Hezbollah installations.

Attacks continued despite the declared ceasefires
The Hezbollah resumed its rocket launches days after Israel and the United States launched their surprise attack on Iran on February 28. Prior to that, Israel carried out regular attacks in Lebanon against what it claimed were militant targets, often killing civilians, despite a previous ceasefire being reached in 2024.
In the southern city of Sidon, many residents reacted to the ceasefire announcement with skepticism, claiming that previous agreements had failed to stop the violence.
"Every few days a ceasefire is announced, but people continue to be killed," Mayada said. Hijazi.
"You just talk and don't act," said Salah Nassab. "We keep returning to our homes and then we are displaced again, in a constant back and forth. We are very tired."
In the latest fighting, Israeli troops have advanced further into southern Lebanon than at any time since the end of the Israeli occupation between 1982 and 2000. They now occupy about a fifth of the country.
More than 3,500 people have been killed in Lebanon and more than 1.2 million have been displaced.

The fighting left 27 Israeli soldiers and three civilians dead.
The ceasefire was the result of negotiations between the US, Israel and Lebanon

The last declared ceasefire was the result of negotiations mediated by the US between Israel and the Lebanese government, which accuses Hezbollah of dragging the country into the war and had made efforts to disarm it before the latest hostilities.
The ceasefire does not officially include Hezbollah and requires the Lebanese armed forces to take control of security zones in Lebanon, which militants would be banned from entering. Hezbollah has stated that it will only adhere to the ceasefire if Israel ceases its attacks and begins its withdrawal from the country.
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun said on Thursday that the new agreement is "the last chance to reach a definitive and comprehensive ceasefire." He said Lebanon is ready to implement Wednesday's agreement as soon as it receives responses from relevant factions in the country, including Hezbollah. The United States - and Trump himself - will determine how and when the agreement is implemented, he told reporters on Thursday.
The agreement states that Hezbollah "is not only an enemy of Israel and an enemy of the United States, but also an enemy of Lebanon" and calls for its dismantlement. The government has promised to do so in the past, but does not have the means to disarm Hezbollah by force.
The most recent agreement did not specify when Israel would withdraw from southern Lebanon, but stated that the US would support the Lebanese army in its efforts to consolidate control in areas where Hezbollah has long exercised power.
Iran has demanded a lasting ceasefire in Lebanon
A senior Iranian general on Thursday reiterated the demand for Tehran called for a full ceasefire in Lebanon and asked Israel to withdraw its troops to the places where they were when the conflict began. At that time, Israel controlled five strategic points along the border.
"Supporting the resistance in Lebanon is a duty for all of us, and eliminating Israel from the region is an achievable goal for Muslims," said Esmail Qaani, head of the Quds Force, an elite unit of the Revolutionary Guard, according to the semi-official Fars and Tasnim news agencies.
With the repeated failure of diplomatic negotiations, Iran and the US have been exchanging fire in and around the Strait of Hormuz, which remains effectively closed. Before the war, about a fifth of the world's oil and gas, as well as large shipments of fertilizers and other goods, passed through this narrow sea passage.
The U.S. has targeted what it sees as Iranian threats to commercial shipping and its own forces, while Iran has launched missile and drone attacks on Gulf countries hosting American troops.
An attack on Wednesday on a commercial airport in Kuwait, also used by American forces for logistics and resupply, killed one Indian citizen and injured more than 60 people, including passengers and staff. Iran denied carrying out the attack.
