Brazil is considering closing a new agreement with Sweden to acquire a fleet of Gripen fighters, said Defense Minister José Múcio.

The head of the department participated in the ceremony handing over the first Gripen F to the FAB (Brazilian Air Force), held in Linköping, Sweden.

The FAB already has a contract signed with Saab, the Swedish company responsible for developing the fighter. The agreement was signed in 2014 and establishes the delivery of 36 aircraft by 2032.

Of this total, there will be 28 fighters from the E series (one seat) and eight from the F series (two seats).

In addition to negotiating for a new fleet, the Ministry of Defense is articulating the creation of a Saab artificial intelligence technology and industrial development center in São José dos Campos (SP).

"We are here for this [to negotiate a new fleet]. We are trying to bring a Saab technology center to Brazil, in São José dos Campos. This is very important. We are going to sow seeds for the development of Saab technology in Brazil", said the minister.

Saab has an agreement with Brazil that allows it to share information and Swedish defense technology with Embraer. In March, the Brazilian company presented the first Gripen E fighter produced entirely on Brazilian soil.

With the launch of the Gripen F this Tuesday (2), minister José Múcio assesses that Brazil will also have the capacity to produce the new model of the Swedish aircraft on national territory in the future.

"There will be more currency for Brazil. I have no doubt that new business opportunities will arise for the entire American continent", declared the minister.

The Ministry of Defense budget foresees R$2.1 billion for the F-X2 (F-39 Gripen) fighter acquisition project. Of this total, R$1.357 billion was already foreseen in the 2026 Annual Budget Law and another R$739.5 million is foreseen in Ordinance No. 184 of May 2026 of the Ministry of Planning and Budget.

"These resources will contribute to the delivery of two aircraft in 2026, as well as to advance the assembly stages of units with deliveries scheduled for subsequent years", said the Ministry of Defense in a note to CNN Brasil.

Brazil will invest, by 2032, an average of 2.26 billion Swedish crowns (R$ 1.2 billion) per year in the acquisition of Gripen from Saab. To date, 28.27 billion Swedish kronor (R$ 15.3 billion) have been disbursed.

Training
The Gripen F is Saab's two-seater fighter model, with space for a pilot and a co-pilot. For this reason, it is often used for training. Brazil is the company's first customer to have this series in its fleet.

The Gripen E is single-seater, that is, it carries only the pilot and is usually intended for combat.

Another difference between the versions is that the "E" series is a little smaller than the "F" when compared to the overall length. The two-seater model is 15.9 meters long and 8.6 meters wide.

According to Saab, the Gripen F brings together more advanced sensors, just like the Gripen E, but the addition of a second cockpit allows the execution of instructor-led missions in a fully operational fighter, since the simulation cannot reproduce the physiological and psychological reality of high-intensity combat.

"It's another plane. It's a big plane. We are adding technology. Our pilots will be trained, no longer in a simulated way.

They will operate on the plane itself", said Múcio.

Partnership with Embraer
The exchange of information between Brazil and Sweden involved an extensive training program with hundreds of Brazilian experts.

Engineers, technicians, assembly and maintenance operators underwent theoretical and practical training that involved flight testing, production and maintenance of the Gripen.

Brazilian engineers from Embraer, AEL Sistemas and Akaer participated in the development of the Gripen F in all phases, from structural design to avionics integration.

In total, 15 of the 36 Saab aircraft acquired by FAB will have final assembly carried out on national soil, at the Embraer plant in Gavião Peixoto (SP). Deliveries are expected to be completed in 2032.

The technology transfer program for Brazil covers four areas:

- Theoretical training;
- Research and Technology Programs;
- On-the-job training in Sweden;
- Development and production.

With the mass production of the F-39 Gripen by Embraer, Brazil became the only country to produce the aircraft outside of Sweden.

National companies such as AEL Sistemas and Atech also participate in the production of avionics systems, structures and strategic components for the Swedish company.
