The United States House approved this Wednesday (3) a resolution to limit President Donald Trump's powers over the war in Iran.

Democrats have been forcing votes on the issue in both the House and Senate - a campaign that has gradually gained more Republican support in recent weeks.

There were 215 votes in favor and 208 against, with Republican representatives Thomas Massie, Brian Fitzpatrick, Tom Barrett and Warren Davidson voting against their parties to support the resolution.

The resolution was presented by Democratic Representative Gregory Meeks of New York, the highest-ranking member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

The vote was originally scheduled for May 21, but was abruptly canceled by Republican leaders just as the party was about to lose due to absences.

At the time, Meeks told reporters he believed House Speaker Mike Johnson was delaying a vote on the measure.

"Many of my Republican colleagues are feeling the pressure in their states as they see the price of food and gasoline," he previously told CNN, highlighting impacts of the conflict in the Middle East.

"(Johnson) is under pressure. He's trying to cover for the president... But I think the time in which he can cover for the president is running out quickly," Meeks added.

House Speaker defends Trump's action
Before Wednesday's vote, Johnson warned that the measure could have a "very negative" impact on negotiations.

"I think it's a very dangerous prospect to take away from the administration and the commander in chief right now the ability to negotiate. That's what happens. It weakens us, it weakens our position and our influence in the peace negotiations in this situation. 'Operation Epic Fury' is complete," he told CNN.

Johnson stated that all US objectives in Iran were "well defined" and "achieved", although some lawmakers, including Republicans, expressed interest in receiving more information from the government.

"The president is now in the process of concluding a peace agreement, and we have to give him the necessary freedom to do so. I think that a resolution on war powers at this time is very untimely and extremely negative and dangerous for the country," he claimed.

Inspectors begin review of war on Iran
Inspectors general from the Pentagon, State Department and USAID have begun a joint review of the U.S. war with Iran, announcing in a press release Wednesday that they are legally required to investigate military operations abroad that exceed 60 days.

The announcement is significant because it indicates that law enforcement agencies believe that, legally, the war has lasted more than 60 days since it began on February 28.

Under the War Powers Act, the president is prohibited from engaging U.S. troops in active hostilities for more than 60 days without congressional approval.

The administration never sought such approval for Operation Epic Fury, the name given by the US to its military campaign against Iran.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said last month that his understanding was that the 60-day deadline for ending the war "reset" when President Donald Trump announced the cease-fire in April.
