Planalto is counting on a meeting between Lula and Trump at the G7
Members of the Planalto Palace are counting on a meeting between President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) and United States President Donald Trump during the G7 summit meeting in France.
Lula confirmed this Wednesday (3) his trip to the summit. The meeting of leaders will take place between the 15th and 17th of June in Evian, France.
According to Planalto sources told the blog, there is no scheduled agenda between the presidents, but as the group of leaders present is smaller, a meeting will be "inevitable". Lula will try to talk about tariffs and strengthen partnerships with the US president.
The G7 is made up of the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy and Japan. Lula was invited to participate in the meeting this year by the host - the president of France, Emmanuel Macron.
Brazil is not part of the group, however, since returning to the Planalto Palace in 2023, Lula has been called to participate in the meetings. Tuesday (2), that 60 countries, including Brazil, failed to prohibit and monitor the import of goods produced with forced labor. In response, the American government proposed the application of additional tariffs of 12.5% on all products from these countries.
This surcharge, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, should be added to the rate proposed in another US report, released on Monday (1st), which accuses the Brazilian government of adopting practices that "encumber or restrict" trade with North Americans.
➡ The first text provided for the application of 25% tariffs on Brazilian goods. The second, an additional 12.5%. Therefore, the surcharge would rise to 37.5%, close to the 40% imposed last year - if it comes into effect.

The president stated this Wednesday that he had not been officially communicated by the United States government about the proposals for new trade tariffs on Brazilian products, and that he intends to send a new letter to Donald Trump.
He said he was surprised by the announcement and that the country "cannot accept" the treatment that the United States gave to Brazil.
Lula made the statement during a ministerial meeting at the Palácio do Planalto. During his opening speech, the PT member reinforced previous speeches, in which he criticized the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and called him a "frustrated Latin American".
