Pseudomonas aeruginosa: what is the bacteria present in batches of water

The bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa was the reason for two cases of product recalls in recent weeks by Anvisa (National Health Surveillance Agency).

This Wednesday (3), the agency suspended batch LZ1, from the Crystal mineral water brand, after routine clinical analyzes detected the presence of the biological agent.

The same bacteria was present in Ypê brand products, which were banned from sale and use in April after the agency identified the biological risk.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa can be found in the human body and, in healthy individuals, does not present serious symptoms. According to the MSD Manual, it is present in the soil and in humid places, it poses a risk mainly to diabetics, immunosuppressed people, people with diseases that harm the immune system, cystic fibrosis or hospitalized people.

It can infect the blood, skin, bones, ears, eyes, lungs, urinary tract, heart valves. Contact can occur through wounds, contact with contaminated water (such as in hot tubs), use of medical devices (such as catheters, breathing tubes and mechanical ventilators).

Infections can affect heart valves, bloodstreams, ears, lungs, eyes, bones, joints and urinary tract, according to information in the MSD Manual.
