Metallica reached another historic milestone in its trajectory and reinforced its position as one of the biggest live bands on the planet. In the midst of the M72 world tour, the group led by James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich broke the attendance record for a stadium show in Germany.

The presentation took place at the Olympiastadion, in Berlin, on Saturday, May 30, bringing together around 94 thousand people. With this number, the band surpassed the previous mark set by U2, which had brought just over 90 thousand spectators to the same stadium in 2009.

The feat is even more impressive because the Olympiastadion's usual capacity for large shows is around 72 thousand people. The expansion of the audience was possible thanks to the innovative stage format developed for the M72 tour, which began in 2023.

The structure of the tour features a circular stage, which repositions the traditional Snake Pit - an area intended for fans closest to the band - to the center of the arena. With the stage hollowed out and distributed differently, more space is available to the public, allowing for greater occupancy of the stadium.

In addition to the circular format, the production has eight towers equipped with screens and sound systems. These structures also include elevated platforms that function as VIP areas, decorated in the black and yellow colors of the album 72 Seasons, released in 2023.

After the show in Berlin, Metallica celebrated the record on social media and thanked their fans for coming. The band highlighted that more than 94 thousand people participated in the performance, establishing the largest audience in the history of the Olympic Stadium in the German capital.

This was not the only recent record on the tour. A few weeks earlier, on May 9, Metallica had also broken the attendance mark at the Athens Olympic Stadium, in Greece, by bringing together more than 90 thousand fans in a venue whose normal capacity is around 75 thousand people.

Another example of the strength of the tour took place in August 2023, when approximately 78 thousand spectators attended each of the two performances held at SoFi Stadium, in Los Angeles. The numbers even surpassed Taylor Swift's records at the same stadium.

The M72 tour has been one of the biggest projects in Metallica's recent career, combining classic repertoire, grandiose production and a stage proposal that transforms the audience's experience. The commercial success shows that, even after more than four decades on the road, the band continues to be able to gather gigantic crowds.

With this new record, Metallica not only surpasses U2 in a historic stadium, but also reaffirms the global strength of heavy metal at major events. The milestone in Berlin goes down in history as one of the greatest demonstrations of public power ever achieved by a rock band.
