BYD announced the Dolphin G DM-i, a new plug-in hybrid hatch that marks a significant change in relation to the electric Dolphin already sold in Brazil. The model was initially revealed for the European market and is part of the Chinese manufacturer's global strategy to expand its presence in the electrified compact segment, which includes Brazil.
Although it shares part of its name with the Dolphin known to Brazilian consumers, the new vehicle has a different design, dimensions and proposal. The commercial debut is scheduled for June in Europe, while the arrival in Brazil has already been confirmed by the manufacturer for 2027.
The Dolphin G DM-i is the first vehicle developed by BYD specifically for international markets, including mainland Europe. The model uses DM-i plug-in hybrid technology, a system that combines a combustion engine and electric propulsion with a focus on energy efficiency and increasing total autonomy. This technology is already offered in Brazil in cars such as Song Pro and Song Plus.

For the Brazilian market, however, the autonomy should be lower due to Inmetro's approval methodologies and the characteristics of the national fuel.
BYD Dolphin G DM-i plug-in hybrid arrives first in Europe - Disclosure
Visually, the Dolphin G DM-i presents profound changes compared to the electric Dolphin. The model adopts a longer front end to accommodate the hybrid package, made up of a 1.5 naturally aspirated gasoline engine associated with an electrical system. Structural changes are also noticeable in the columns, doors and body proportions.
Measuring 4.16 meters long and 1.83 meters wide, the hatch is positioned in the European B segment, a category equivalent to premium compacts. The design abandons part of the minivan profile present in the electric Dolphin and takes on a silhouette closer to traditional hatches.

The images released by the manufacturer reveal new optical sets, redesigned bumpers and a specific visual identity for the international market. The front grille also suggests the adoption of active aerodynamic elements, capable of opening or closing air intakes depending on the mechanical system's cooling needs.
Although BYD has not yet officially released power, torque and battery capacity, the expectation is that the model will use a configuration similar to that applied to other plug-in hybrids from the brand. Among the possibilities is a set with a combined power of close to 212 hp and Blade batteries of approximately 18 kWh.
In the Brazilian market, the new hybrid hatch may occupy a price range below that currently charged by the electric Dolphin. Estimates point to values between R$130,000 and R$150,000, expanding the reach of plug-in hybrid technology for consumers looking for lower-cost alternatives to fully electric vehicles.
