A fire broke out in a building in New Delhi, the capital of India, leaving 18 dead and several injured, this Wednesday (3).

The building, located in the Malviya Nagar neighborhood, in the southern region of the city, it had a restaurant on the ground floor and residential units on the upper floors.
Fire crews rescued 37 people from the building, said officer Abhilash Malik. The fire has been brought under control, but the cause has not yet been clarified.

According to local media, some of the victims were foreigners who had traveled to India seeking medical treatment.
Images showed firefighters trying to contain the flames as thick smoke billowed from the building. Local residents also helped with rescue efforts, evacuating trapped people and carrying some of the injured to safety.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences over the deaths, his office said in a Facebook post. The publication also stated that the victims' families will receive 200,000 rupees (R$10,458.58) each in financial aid.
