"He was the love of my life." This is how Monique Medeiros, mother of Henry Borel, a boy who died at the age of four, spoke about her son during the testimonies on the ninth day of the trial, which took place this Tuesday morning (12), at the Rio de Janeiro Jury Court. The speech took place while the defendant was recalling an episode during a call with Henry, who had asked her: "Mommy, am I disturbing you?"
After the boy's question, Monique would have denied that her son would be a burden to her and stated how much she loved him. "I always fit Henry into everything, I took him everywhere, he was my keychain [...] I told him no (about getting in the way) and that he was the love of my life", he stated.
The woman, accused of murder by omission, torture and coercion, is the first to be interrogated at this stage of the process. The trial is already considered the longest in the history of Rio de Janeiro in the last 18 years.

Right at the beginning of her speech, Monique asked that Jairo Souza Santos Júnior, known as Jairinho, be removed from the plenary so that she could continue with her report.
During the interrogation, the woman detailed a little about the chronology of her relationship with Jairinho, stating that, initially, he had a "polite, kind and honest" behavior. According to her, as he was a doctor and a councilman, he was "above suspicion" and she trusted him completely.
Monique recalled an episode that occurred in January 2021, when she received messages from the nanny reporting that Henry was limping after being alone with Jairinho. According to her, at that moment she did not interpret the situation as a possible attack. The defendant stated that Jairinho had said that the boy fell after playing and that he believed the version presented.

She also stated that, if she had known about any torture, she would never have continued in the relationship. "At no point did I think that Jairo could hit my son", he added.
Monique stated that, still concerned about complaints of knee pain, she took Henry to the hospital the next day for medical evaluation.
According to her report, the child repeated to health professionals that she had fallen out of bed. She stated that she requested tests to be carried out and that the doctors did not identify any injuries during that visit. After the consultation, Henry was taken to his maternal grandparents' house. Days later, according to Monique, he returned to stay with her and Jairinho during a trip to Mangaratiba.
Henry's behavior
According to Monique's statement, Henry began to exhibit strange behavior. She points out that the boy would have become more "pouty", that he started crying more and vomiting and even shaking when he saw Jairinho.
The defendant also stated that she had sought help from psychologists and pediatricians, and even sent a note to the school asking for help in identifying what was wrong. But, according to her, everyone, including Leniel Borel, the child's father, believed that the reactions were the result of adapting to the divorce.
Trial enters final stretch
Monique's testimony took place on the ninth day of the trial and marks the beginning of the interrogation phase of the accused. After its hearing, the Jury Court will hear Jairinho, named by the Public Prosecutor's Office as the author of the attacks that caused Henry's death.
Once the interrogations are complete, the trial will move on to debates between the prosecution and defense. Afterwards, the seven jurors who make up the Sentencing Council will decide whether to convict or acquit the defendants.
