A gunman killed six members of a family and then took his own life during a series of shooting attacks on Monday in the eastern Iowa city of Muscatine, a river town across the Mississippi River, police said.
A preliminary investigation into the gun violence indicated that the shootings "stemmed from a family dispute," the Muscatine Police Department said in a statement. However, there was no mention of what may have precipitated the attack.
Four of the victims were found shot to death by police officers inside a residence. According to the report of these police officers, the shots occurred shortly after noon local time.
Although the alleged shooter had fled the scene before police arrived, he was identified as Ryan Willis McFarland, 52, a resident of Muscatine. He was located on the city's riverfront trail near a pedestrian bridge, Police Chief Anthony Kies said during a news conference.

While officers were talking to him, he took his own life, police said.
After information surfaced indicating there might be more victims, police found the bodies of two other men McFarland is believed to have shot. One of them was in a nearby home and the other was in a business establishment.
All of the victims were believed to be members of the shooter's family, Kies said. They have not been publicly identified. An ABC television affiliate reported that at least two of the victims were children.
The police chief told reporters that McFarland had a criminal record but gave no other details.
Muscatine is the county seat of Muscatine County, a city of about 24,000 people, and is about 250 km east of the Iowa state capital, Des Moines.
