Trump appoints Florida deputy to be ambassador to Brazil
Conservative deputy Daniel Perez was nominated this Monday (1st) by President Donald Trump to be the new United States ambassador to Brazil. The Florida congressman is a strong supporter of the "Make America Great Again" (MAGA) movement and defends North American actions in Latin America.

At 38 years old, Perez presides over the Florida House of Representatives, which is equivalent to a State Legislative Assembly in Brazil. The son of Cuban immigrants, he was born in New York, but moved to the south of the country as a child, in 1993.
If approved by the Senate, Perez will be the first United States ambassador to Brazil since the departure of Elizabeth Bagley, appointed by former president Joe Biden.
The post has been vacant since January 2025, when Trump returned to the White House.
Currently, the American diplomatic mission in Brasília is commanded by chargé d'affaires Gabriel Escobar.
On social media and in public speeches, Perez usually demonstrates alignment with the agendas defended by Trump, especially in the areas of immigration, public security and the fight against drug trafficking.
In January 2025, he celebrated the approval of the call "TRUMP Act" in Florida, a law aimed at tightening policies against irregular immigration.
At the time, he stated that the measure would give direct support to the Trump administration in deporting irregular immigrants, strengthening security forces and controlling borders.
"The TRUMP Act is a big step forward in providing President Trump with the necessary tools he needs to protect our border, make our nation safer and make America great again," he posted on a social network.
Another frequent topic in Perez's public demonstrations are the situations of Cuba and Venezuela. In January of this year, he praised the American operation that resulted in the capture of former Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro.

Despite his closeness to Trump, Perez has been involved in a political dispute in recent months with the governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis, another influential name in the Republican Party.
In recent weeks, the president of the state House prevented the advancement of projects supported by the governor, including measures to relax vaccination requirements for public school students and to change rules related to artificial intelligence companies.
The conflict between the two also involves negotiations over the state budget. In May, for example, the Florida House stopped approving funding for programs championed by Casey DeSantis, the governor's wife.
"When you have people who were elected behind our backs, like the speaker of the House, and they take office and do the opposite of what voters expected us to do, I'm going to point that out," DeSantis said during an event in May, according to the Miami Herald.
"I'm going to let people know that's what he's doing."
During the Covid-19 pandemic, Perez also adopted different positions from the more radical wings of the American right. In public demonstrations, he encouraged vaccination and publicized places where people could look for immunizers.
